| Position Summary | Enhancer chromatin in craniofacial and skeletal disorders: The Shpargel Laboratory in the University of North Carolina Genetics Department is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to lead a R01 funded project studying the impact of enhancer chromatin activation factors on facial development and neural crest stem cell biology. The histone methylases, demethylases, acetylases, and reader proteins that catalyze and translate enhancer activation events are mutated in a wide array of human developmental disorders featuring craniofacial and skeletal abnormalities. We utilize a variety of mouse genetic and cell culture models in combination with the latest genomic editing and sequencing methodologies to understand the cellular and molecular functions of histone modifying enzymes at the genome level with respect to human disorders. Current projects are examining the roles of these enzymes in balancing stem cell maintenance with osteoblast and chondrocyte differentiation. We are utilizing gene editing technology, CRISPR screens, and proteomics to explore the novel non-catalytic function of chromatin modifiers in enhancer activation. | Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | A strong background in developmental biology, mammalian cell culture, and molecular biology is preferred. |
