The Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology at The University of Chicago is consistently ranked among the best specialty nationally by U.S News and World Report. With nearly 30 specialists on staff, our program plays a leading role in the understanding of digestive diseases and in developing innovative and successful treatments for patients. Since forming the nation’s first full-time department of gastroenterology in 1927, our physicians have continually improved treatments for digestive tract and related disorders by combining medical research, education, and patient care at the highest level.

Job Summary
 

The Section of Gastroenterology is looking for a Research Technician to recruit patients for translational research projects in digestive disease and to advance basic-research efforts in the preclinical laboratory. The position will be roughly equally divided between these responsibilities. Our laboratory studies biological mechanisms that lie at the intersection of stem cells, wound healing, cancer, and microbiome in the digestive tract, using mouse models and human tissue. The goal of the research is to make fundamental new insights towards regenerative medicine for chronic inflammatory conditions of the intestines. This training position represents an opportunity to meet and interact with patients and physicians while developing or further skills related to state-of-the-art laboratory methods in medical biology research. The lab is embedded within a tight-knit environment of dedicated and creative scientists and benefits from institutional strengths of a large digestive disease and microbiome research center at the University of Chicago (Hyde Park).

Responsibilities

• Perform and assist with experiments utilizing human tissue and mouse models, under supervision of principal investigator, postdoctoral researcher, or graduate student.

• Help to grow and maintain mouse/human organoid cultures.

• Identify, consent, and enroll patients who are undergoing surgical procedures at UChicago hospitals into GI tissue biobanking efforts.

• Participate in laboratory meetings regarding current research and other lab activities.

• Assist with organizing laboratory.

• Maintains a safe environment for others and self; adheres to safety policies and procedures.

• Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.

• Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.

• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
