Post-doctoral Research Associate

Job Description



Applications are invited for appointment of a post-doctoral research associate to conduct research and teach in the area of global Chinese studies in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (http://as.virginia.edu/) and the East Asia Center (EAC: http://eastasiacenter.as.virginia.edu/) at the University of Virginia.  


 


Responsibilities would include:  


  • Teach two classes per year focused on global China in an area of their own specialization. 
  • Manage essential elements of the day-to-day operations of the program and assist the program director and associate director. 
  • Plan and execute programmatic meetings. 
  • Organize public and private program events and conferences.  
  • Represents the program vis-a?-vis other research programs and functional support offices within UVA and vis-a?-vis external stakeholders in government, the private sector, and the non-profit community in the United States, China and elsewhere. 
  • Supports the program’s research assistant program and assists its visiting fellows.  
  • Other administrative tasks as needed.  

 


Minimum Qualifications:  


  • PhD in hand by the time of appointment 

 


Preferred Qualifications:  


  • Have demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research, experience in and evidence of achievement in field(s) relevant to global China 
  • Have a working language in addition to English 
  • Events planning and management experience 
  • Student mentorship or student worker management experience 
  • Publications in the field of Chinese Studies  


Applicants of all fields will be considered, with the following areas particularly encouraged: Global studies, history, media studies, politics, sociology or others. Regardless of discipline, applicants should be strongly oriented to interdisciplinary work. 


 


This is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance. Salary is $47,500 per year, with full benefits. Appropriate research and mentoring support will be provided, including faculty mentoring from the home department of the fellow’s own discipline. In addition to the home department, the post-doctoral research associate will be associated with the East Asia Center and would be eligible to apply for grants from these units.  

This position will remain open till filled and review of applications will begin on June 23, 2023.  The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
