Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state. 
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Assistant Dean II for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The position will lead all activities related to the successful advising, onboarding, and transition for traditional first-year undergraduate students. This position creates, implements, and provides leadership for all onboarding processes, including advising, registration activities, coordination of faculty advisors, and decision-making about institutional policies of new first-year students as well as the oversight and evaluation of all pre-college exams and credits. The Assistant Dean is the institutional expert for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences on all issues related to first-year student enrollment and transition activities, and as such, anticipates complex functional needs and develops recommendations and solutions for problems, policies and services that meet the needs of new students while coordinating with the priorities of SEBS and the university. The person in this position is part of a team of advisors in the Office of Academic Programs dedicated to general undergraduate advising and student success.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Responsible for the onboarding process for all newly-admitted first-year students.
  • Designs the materials to communicate degree requirements, create and implement effective advising structures, coordinate with faculty members across the disciplines at SEBS and across the university to prepare materials to effectively advise new first-year students in course and major choosing. Coordinate the review and processing of all pre-college exams and coursework for SEBS students.
  • Designs and implement large scale advising and registration programs for fall and spring admits.
  • Provides leadership and direction in the planning, execution, and assessment of these events, including training and supporting faculty advisors, and responding effectively to all inquiries regarding the needs of first-year students.
  • Serves as a member of the Dean’s staff in the Office of Academic Programs to support all office-wide tasks for the SEBS general student population, including providing developmental individual and group advising, managing an advising caseload of first-year students, participating in all large-scale academic programming including APA Day, STAR Day, graduation certification, delay drop/probation advising and other administrative duties including serving on school and university committees as assigned.
  • Oversees planning and implementation for ongoing programming and intervention efforts to support first-year student transition, success, and progress to timely graduation.
  • Coordinates with members of the OAP staff to provide effective communication, planning and programming to facilitate major declaration.
  • Develops innovative efforts and partnerships within the SEBS community, across the university, and within the broader professional community to support first-year student success.
  • Coordinates the selection, training, and support for a team of SEBS first-year advisors, faculty and staff, who provide personal attention and support for the SEBS first-year population and their transition to the University.
  • Coordinates with various offices to ensure that SEBS first-year students are eligible for and enrolled in all high-impact practices to enhance their transition, including Academic Mentoring, Portals to Academic Study Success, Learning Communities, First-Year Interest Group Seminars, Byrne Seminars, and other new initiatives.
  • Develops collaborative efforts and strategic alliances with internal constituents, particularly collaborations with the SEBS Office of Global Engagement to provide effective outreach, support, and retention efforts for international students.
  • Serves as liaison other university offices, including the Office of Enrollment Management, the Office of Academic Scheduling and Instructional Space, and other Rutgers units that establish onboarding planning and policy, and external agencies such as the College Board, FFA, and 4H.
  • Tracks national and international trends affecting recruitment, transition, and retention for diverse student populations, and work with national advising and first-year experience and transition organizations and across Rutgers to develop student success initiatives.
  • Collects, manages and assesses data to track student progress, graduation rates, and institutional goals.
  • Creates and analyze reports to gauge student progress and identify pathways and impediments to student success.
  • Utilizes data to create innovative and effective programming and support structures.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.
The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Master’s degree and a minimum of 3 years overall professional experience in Higher Education.

  • Have administrative experience, possess outstanding organizational and communication skills, political astuteness, excellent decision making skills, public speaking abilities and the ability to interact with a diverse group of constituents.
  • Work well individually as well as on a team and represent the School and University professionally and enthusiastically.
  • Have excellent computer skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Acquaintance with Rutgers academic policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with best practices for first-year student success and academic advising.
  • Familiarity with diversity, equity and social justice principles in higher education, and with working with first-generation student populations.
  • Familiarity with academic planning with international students/partners.
