Position Details
Full/Part Time Status: Full Time
Percent Time: 100%
Position Description:

A Postdoctoral Scholar position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Oliver Gramlich in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Research areas include i) modelling autoimmune mediated optic neuropathies, ii) investigating the pathobiology of retinal ganglion cell degeneration and demyelination caused by Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) and Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO), and iii) examining novel therapeutic strategies to preserve vision and foster optic nerve remyelination in optic neuritis models.

The laboratory employs rodent models of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and antibody-induced demyelination, mammalian cell culture systems and iPSC-derived organoid systems, and multidisciplinary approaches ranging from immunology to genetics and proteomics. Applicants should have solid conceptual and research backgrounds in in vivo experimentation, molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, proteomics, and genetics with a publication record in the field of neurosciences and/or ophthalmology. Individuals who are highly motivated and willing to take risks for innovation are encouraged to apply. Successful candidate is expected to work independently, yet in a collaborative environment with a group of scientists with various levels of expertise.

NOTE: This position is cross posted with job requisition #22005617 for Assistant Research Scientist/Engineer (Gramlich Lab) – Ophthalmology. One candidate will be hired for one position, not both.

Education Requirement:

A PhD or MD/PhD degree in Biological Sciences.

Required Qualifications:

- Several years of hands-on research experience in in vivo and in vitro experimentation, molecular and cellular biology, immunology, and/or proteomics but less than 3 years of post-PhD experience.

- Strong expertise in animal experimentation (rats and mice), preferrable related to neuroscience or the visual system.

- Proficient in standard molecular biology techniques (e.g., DNA and RNA isolation, quantitative Real Time PCR,), histological techniques (e.g. cryostat and paraffin sectioning, immunohistochemistry), common biochemical techniques (e.g., protein isolation and purification from human and mouse tissue samples, SDS-PAGE, and immunoblotting), common cell biology techniques (e.g. FACS sorting and immune cell phenotyping) and tissue culture techniques (i.e. establishing and maintaining cell lines)

- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to independently design and conduct experiments and interpret data.

Certifications:

N/A

Desirable Qualifications:

- Knowledge and experience in retinal, optic nerve and CNS histology and diseases (MS, MOGAD, NMO).

- Hands-on skills in induction of retinal ganglion cell and/or optic nerve degeneration, surgical manipulations in the visual system, and induction of autoimmune reactions (e.g. EAE).

- Experience in neuron and microglia cell culture as well as in retina and brain organoid systems is a major plus.

- Background in immunology and neuroscience is desired.

- Prior experience with retinal imaging (e.g. optical coherence tomography), visual electrophysiology (e.g. pattern ERG, VEP recordings), and assessment of visual acuity in rodents.
