Postdoctoral Research Associate in Statistics (NSSAC) | Biocomplexity

Job Description

About Us.

The Biocomplexity Institute (BI) integrates leading edge scientific research – from genetic sequencing to policy analysis – to tackle the complex task of understanding massively interacting systems and predicting solutions to issues impacting human health, well-being, and habitat. We collaborate across many disciplines to discover connections between health, information networks, security, and infrastructure. The foundation of our methodology lies in information biology: the synthesis of mathematics, computation, informatics, and biology. We approach complex problem solving by assembling teams of experts in a variety of fields to work together to create solutions that challenge the very fields in which the teams operate.

NSSAC division focuses on the study of massively interacting socio-technical and biological systems. The division has been at the forefront of COVID response efforts, development of agent-based models, network science and large-scale data analysis.

The UVA Biocomplexity Institute is located in the UVA Research Park at 994 Research Park Boulevard, Charlottesville, VA.

The Role.

The postdoctoral fellow will collaborate with a multidisciplinary research team to develop statistical methods to analyze large socio-technical data sets, demography and causality. Specific areas of interest include: (i) analysis of high dimensional data sets, (ii) design of experiments, (iii) Bayesian and noon-Bayesian statistical analysis, (iv) methods for data imputation, (v) statistical analysis of large agent based models, (vi) methods for inferring behavior from large corpus of social, behavioral and health data, (vii) statistical methods for inference, optimization and learning pertaining to complex socio-technical systems.

At BI, postdocs develop their research and training agendas through formal mentorship, seminars, and conferences, to explore and identify professional needs and career objectives. Postdoctoral fellows get a unique opportunity to work with some of the leaders in the field, analyze state of the art massive data sets, carry out foundational research and apply this research to real-world problems. The division has a vibrant transdisciplinary team-science culture.
