BrazilFoundation is a grantmaking organization that mobilizes resources for civil society organizations in Brazil to promote equality, social justice and economic opportunity for all Brazilians. Since its founding in 2000, BrazilFoundation has built a philanthropic community of more than 10,000 donors and friends and has invested US$40 million in more than 600 community-level initiatives in all 26 Brazilian states. BrazilFoundation is recognized as a leader and innovator in the philanthropic sector. The foundation was named as “Organization of the Year” by ABCR (Brazilian Association of Fundraising Professionals) in 2018 and  one of the 100 Best Nonprofits in Brazil, by Instituto Doar.

Summary of Responsibilities:

The President and CEO is responsible for leading BrazilFoundation’s operations globally, including managing a staff of 15+ people in Brazil and in the US, as well as volunteer committees in five cities.  The CEO assures effective program planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. S/he also oversees the Foundation´s finances, assuring transparency and accountability, and works in close collaboration with the Board of Directors in developing strategies for fundraising and grantmaking.  The CEO will lead the development of BrazilFoundation’s vision for the next 5-10 years, develop and execute the operational plan.

Key Duties:

Strategic and Institutional

  • Provide leadership, vision and strategic direction to BrazilFoundation's operations in the US and Brazil, consistent with the mission;

  • Lead development of program, development and communication strategies and oversee their implementation;

  • Propose and implement new models of support and financing campaigns;

  • Act as spokesperson for the organization worldwide, building external relationships and serving as an advocate;

  • Engage the Brazilian community in the US and other nationals with interests in Brazil, providing a path to give back to Brazil;

  • Ensure that BrazilFoundation continues to play a relevant role in civil society and the philanthropic sector in Brazil and the US;

  • Assure operational excellence and compliance in all activities conducted;

  • Develop BrazilFoundation future leadership.

 

Administration and Finance

  • Exercise responsible financial stewardship by supervising and ensuring accountability and transparency of the organization’s financial and administrative management, including accounting and auditing procedures, and prepare financial reports.

  • In collaboration with Rio office and the Treasurer, prepare the annual budget to reflect organizational strategies and monitor budget execution.

  • Ensure procedures for retention, protection, retrieval and disposal of records as well as donor privacy and digital data protection.

  • Manage human resources, assuring staff is recruited, trained, inspired and developed, and that annual performance reviews are conducted.

 

Programs

  • Develop strategic vision for the foundation’s program area and ensure program quality and effectiveness;

  • Provide oversight for BrazilFoundation's program activities, including project selection, monitoring and evaluation; development of metrics and indicators to evaluate results; and preparation of program reports to partners and donors;

  • Develop opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing with other funders and partners.

Development

  • Based on trends and best practices in philanthropy, develop and implement fundraising strategies to support the foundation’s missions and goals, including resources for annual grantmaking, the endowment and core support, focusing on individual, family and corporate donors/foundations and partnerships, donor-advised donations and planned giving;

  • Develop and deepen past and current donor/partner relationships, ensuring that the organization maintains effective communications and good relations with partners and donors, and keeping them updated on the Foundation´s work and achievements;

  • Ensure Raisers Edge database is updated regularly;

  • Supervise the organization of and attend galas and other fundraising events.

 Board relations

Work closely with the Board Chair to:

  • Maintain positive and proactive relationships with members of the Board of Directors and Global Advisors;

  • Develop annual goals for the board subject to board review and approval;

  • Identify key issues for board deliberations;

  • Develop agendas and materials for board meetings and oversee administration of board meetings and actions;

  • Track all recommended board actions and maintain a reporting process to the board;

  • Identify potential new board members, in collaboration with the Governance Committee.

 

Skills Required

  • Experience in strategic planning, financial management, budget control and fundraising/development;

  • Professional experience in non-profit management and/or programming preferred;

  • Leadership, problem solving, conflict management and public speaking skills;

  • Understanding of the dynamics of Brazilian civil society and commitment to social inclusion;

  • Understanding of Brazilian living abroad needs and evolving presence;

  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work;

  • Attention to detail and problem solving skills;

  • Strong organizational and planning skills;

  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills;

  • Discretion and ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information;

  • Strong computer skills, knowledge of QuickBooks and Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge a plus;

  • Tactful with the public, media, volunteers and staff;

  • Fluent in English and Portuguese;

  • Permission to legally work in the US required;

  • Available for national and international travel;

  • Bachelor’s degree, with Master´s degree in social sciences, education, public health, management or related area preferred.

Full-time

Salary commensurate with experience.
