The Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national force of youth conservation volunteers, has an exciting opportunity in our Advancement Department. America’s #1 youth conservation service organization seeks a Director, Foundation Relations in our Arlington, VA office.

As the Director of Foundation Relations, you will direct foundation fundraising efforts to support SCA’s national and local fundraising objectives. Working closely with advancement leadership, develop strategies to strengthen and grow existing foundation relationships and develop a robust prospect pipeline to grow foundation revenue. Lead a team of five grant mangers ensuring the quality and consistency of SCA proposals and reports across regional and national fundraising efforts. Manage a personal portfolio of high-level foundation contacts and direct staff who maintain regional and local foundation contacts. Work closely with executive team, national, program, and partnership staff to ensure foundation fundraising efforts reflect organizational priorities, both nationally and locally.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead Foundation Relations efforts to cultivate, solicit, and steward foundation prospects and donors;

  • Manage three regionally-focused foundation relations specialists, one nationally focused foundation relations manager, and two public grant writers. Conduct annual goal-setting and review with each direct report;

  • In coordination with senior Advancement leadership, establish fundraising priorities for above-mentioned foundation relations staff;

  • Prepare corresponding annual foundation revenue plan and associated budgets;

  • Manage a personal portfolio of foundation donors and prospects;

  • Work closely with advancement operations team to track foundation fundraising and revenue and ensure effective moves management for foundation prospects and donors;

  • Collaborate with director of evaluation strategy and program, partnership, and finance staff to ensure that grant deliverables are being tracked and met;

  • Ensure the quality and consistency of grant proposals and report;

  • Work with executive team and leadership volunteers on foundation outreach and communications;

  • Write, review and/or edit proposals, reports, and other donor communication as needed.

Performance Measures/Accountabilities:

  • Ensure the foundation team’s monthly and annual revenue goals are achieved;

  • Ensure fundraising efforts are aligned with organizational priorities;

  • Maintain regular and timely reporting on progress towards goals;

  • Reconcile with Finance and communicate with Program to ensure grant requirements are met on both in terms of financial stewardship and programmatic fulfillment;

  • Ensure continued professional development for the Foundation Relations Team by providing leadership and training opportunities;

  • Understand and abide by the Corporate Giving policies adopted by SCA;

  • Understand and abide by the policies and guidelines outlined in the SCA Staff Handbook;

  • Understand and model SCA’s Operating Values and Leadership Behaviors.


  • Bachelor’s degree with 7-10 years of job related experience

  • Self-starter, comfortable working and managing in a deadline driven and detailed financial reporting environment

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and significant experience with grant writing

  • Managerial experience required with demonstrated ability to manage staff (both on-site and remote) in a complex and fast-paced environment

  • Demonstrated high level of skill in planning, budgeting, and staff development

  • Strong working knowledge and experience with MSOffice products required; experience with Luminate CRM or other donor management software highly preferred

  • Commitment to the goals and mission of SCA

  • Valid driver’s license with MVR that meets SCA requirements necessary

  • Willingness to travel
