The Center for Equity, Leadership, and Social Justice in Education (CELSJE) at Loyola University Maryland invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow funded under a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant awarded to Dr. Qi Shi, the director of CESLJE and associate professor at Loyola to conduct a study on Latinas’ resistance behaviors in Engineering programs. The CESLJE Postdoctoral Research Fellowship funded by NSF is designed to support early career scholars on their path to becoming tenure-track faculty and scholar in education. Loyola University Maryland is a liberal arts university in the Jesuit tradition. This is a three-year full-time (12 month) position beginning in July 2023. The candidate must have a PhD in the field of education or related field by the time of employment. ABD can be considered only if candidates have a dissertation defense date scheduled in Summer or Fall 2023.
Program Details: The postdoctoral researcher’s development will be enhanced through a program of structured mentoring activities. The goal of the mentoring program is to provide the skills, knowledge, and experience to prepare the postdoctoral researcher to excel in career development. To accomplish this, fellow will participate and follow a structured mentoring plan that includes but not limited to: orientation, career counseling/advising, opportunities to experience with preparation of grant proposals, publications and presentations, teaching and mentoring skills, collaborating with researchers from diverse backgrounds, etc.
The fellow will be leading a research project funded by NSF to study Latinas’ resistance behaviors in engineering undergraduate programs at six different institutions in three different states. In addition to research, the fellow will be offered opportunity to teach a course, for an additional stipend, and will have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate and/or graduate students and participate in the life of the department and university. The fellow can apply for additional funding at the CESLJE to support research projects over summer. The Fellow will attend faculty meetings (and otherwise participate in the life of the department). Funds will be provided for research and related travel.
Responsibilities of the position include conduct research activities and lead data collection and analysis in a qualitative study funded by NSF, attending faculty meetings at CELSJE, and participating in other departmental and SOE events. Ph.D. field of study is open to education or related fields, e.g., counselor education, psychology, teacher education, education leadership, anthropology, STEM education, etc. Experiences with research on underrepresented student populations in STEM or education field is highly desired.
Compensation: Competitive annual salary, research and travel money available, additional internal research funds available through application.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a PhD completed by the time of employment or a dissertation defense date scheduled for summer or Fall 2023; Demonstrate the potential for significant scholarly activity and experience with qualitative data collection and analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of using qualitative (e.g., NVivo) and quantitative data analysis software (e.g., SPSS) and experience with conducting research on STEM education or underrepresented student populations in STEM are highly desired.
