UChicagoGRAD, a part of the Office of the Provost that supports graduate education across the University, is an innovative national model for preparing graduate students and postdocs to succeed while at UChicago and beyond. With teams focusing on admissions, fellowship advising, writing support and public speaking training, diversity initiatives, career exploration and planning, and administration, UChicagoGRAD works with campus partners to support students and postdocs at every stage of their academic careers and beyond. UChicagoGRAD functions as a one-stop shop for graduate students and postdocs to access resources that support timely degree completion and to enhance professional preparation that helps them translate their degrees into a variety of careers. UChicagoGRAD works with academic departments and divisions as well as campus-wide offices to develop and implement outreach, recruitment, and yield efforts; graduate and postdoc-focused programs, workshops, and events; training and support tailored to UChicago graduate students and postdocs; and administrative practices and policies in support of graduate education.


Job Summary
 

The job provides professional support for University labor and employee relations.

Responsibilities

  • Working with the University’s graduate schools and divisions, the Office of Employee and Labor Relations (ELR), the Office of Legal Counsel, and other key stakeholders, supports the University’s efforts related to negotiation and implementation of a collective bargaining agreement with Graduate Students United – United Electrical Works (GSU-EU).

  • Uses independent judgement and discretion to assess, respond to, and document student and administrative questions and concerns related to contractual articles and requirements.

  • Provides ongoing guidance and training for campus partners who are responsible for implementing and enforcing contractual articles and administrative activities.

  • Supports the writing, formatting, and finalizing of policies and other related documents; coordinates publication to University websites as appropriate.

  • Responds to internal and union requests for information and data; works with units across the university to gather and analyze data and information to support requests.

  • As part of the UChicagoGRAD team, participates in the continued development and implementation of university-wide supportive resources that create community and contribute to the academic and professional success of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

  • Supports the grievance, arbitration and NLRB case management efforts by coordinating meetings; researching issues; discussing strategy and tactics with ELR Consultants and Executive Director; gathers information necessary for grievance meetings, arbitration hearings and NLRB hearings, working closely with in-house and outside University advocates as needed. Maintains ELR electronic and paper records including tank files, the ELR Work Tracker and paper files.

  • Participates in labor negotiations by coordinating schedules, securing rooms, and making logistical arrangements for bargaining sessions; attends bargaining sessions to serve as note-taker and to ensure the proper maintenance of the negotiation record through the tracking of proposals and agreements and the recording of the table discussion. Edits and finalizes collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) to ensure accuracy; publishes signed CBAs to University website.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:

  • College or university degree.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience.

  • Experience in research-intensive university setting.

  • Experience in data collection and analysis strongly preferred.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Familiarity with standard tools and software, such as MS Office suite.

  • Familiarity with relevant legal or other standards related to higher education.
