| Position Summary | We are seeking a highly motivated, independent and dynamic postdoctoral research fellow to join the Turner Lab at the UNC Chapel Hill HIV Cure Center to study the biology of HIV latency. Our laboratory is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms of HIV latency in order to develop targeted latency reversal agents for HIV cure strategies. We have an immediate need for a postdoctoral fellow to support a project recently funded in collaboration with two other Cure Center labs to study the relationship between viral latency, integration sites, and epigenomics to improve clearance strategies. This project will involve techniques including Nanopore and Illumina sequencing, Cut&Tag, IPDA, quantitative viral outgrowth assays, and more. Interested candidates should have a Ph.D. in the life sciences, preferably molecular, immunology and/or cell biology with experience in primary cell culture, flow cytometry and standard molecular biology techniques (western, IP, nucleic acid purification, PCR). Additional experience in NGS library prep/analysis and chromatin biology assays sought. Other projects in the lab that would benefit from a talented fellow include development of novel bivalent molecules for latency reversal (EMSA/SPR/biochemical characterization expertise sought) and use of CRISPR/degron tagging to study chromatin complexes in HIV latency (CRISPR/HDR, cell culture, transfections/transductions, flow cytometry, chromatin assay experience sought). Candidates interested in any of these projects are encouraged to apply. The Turner Lab has an in-lab Nanopore Mk1C, Attune cytometer, BioRad ADG/ddPCR readers, Qiacube, Simoa HD-X, qPCR/PCR equipment, dedicated BSL2 space, and various other resources to ensure a highly productive research environment. The HIV Cure Center within the Institute of Global Health and Infectious Disease and School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is focused on the discovery, development, and implementation of new treatments to allow durable treatment-free remission of HIV infection (cure). The HIV Cure Center is supported by University, federal, and private funding sources. The Center seeks to comingle academic and industry approaches, redefining research and seeking the breakthroughs needed to tackle this extraordinarily challenging global health issue. | Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | MD and/or Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology, virology, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, biophysics, biomedical engineering, or a related field are required. |
| Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Candidates should have strong laboratory and analytical skills as demonstrated by a track record of relevant publications. Outstanding communication skills in English (both spoken and written) are essential for this position. Candidates will be expected to present data internally and contribute to external publications when appropriate. |
| Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | Ideal candidate will have experience and interest in basic science models of HIV or other viral infection, flow cytometry, tissue culture, techniques in molecular biology and biochemistry including western blots, PCR, and immunoprecipitations, and experience in facilitating translational research at the clinical/basic science interface. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in Nanopore/NGS and bioinformatics analysis. |
| Special Physical/Mental Requirements | Must possess flexibility, mobility and strength to store and access research samples, reagents, and supplies. Needs to have the physical ability to perform many varied tasks; i.e. fine motor skills, excellent hand-eye coordination, and a high level of concentration to do challenging techniques. Must comply with all environmental health and safety rules including proper use of all personal protective equipment. |
