Job Description

Classification Title:

Postdoctoral Research Associates on the CMS experiment CERN

Job Description:

The University of Florida (UF) high energy physics group invites applications for the immediate openings for outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associates on the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The UF CMS group currently comprises 6 faculty (Profs. Avery, Chang, Konigsberg, Korytov, Mitselmakher, and Takahashi), 2 engineers, 6 postdoctoral researchers, and 7 graduate students. We are one of the largest US university groups in the CMS experiment and have maintained strong involvement and leadership at CMS. The group’s technical activities include detector operations and upgrades of the Level-1 muon trigger and the Cathode Strip Chamber (CSC) muon system, tracking algorithm R&D, and the development of the Level-1 trigger algorithms for the future High-Luminosity LHC. UF also hosts and manages a CMS Tier-2 computing center. The group’s main physics analysis topics cover measurements of Higgs boson properties using four-lepton and bb decay modes, multi-Higgs production, tri-boson production, and searches for new physics using taus, multilepton and multi-b final states.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Yuta Takahashi and is expected to play a leading role in searching for new interactions that can distinguish lepton flavors as well as the firmware/software development of L1 algorithms with tracks for HL-LHC, with a special focus on improving reconstruction of and triggering on hadronically decaying tau leptons. The candidate is expected to work closely with our graduate students and other postdocs, as well as collaborate with members of other CMS groups.

Expected Salary:

The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and the compensation includes a full benefits package.

Minimum Requirements:

Applicants must have a PhD in experimental particle physics at the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Deep understanding of the particle detector, particle identification, data analysis
- Machine learning experience is considered a plus
- Expertise in programming (c++ and python)
