Job Description

The Center for Healthy Brain Development at the University of Virginia is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join their team of investigators with a multidisciplinary research portfolio spanning brain development across the lifespan. We seek candidates with strong research experience who could hit the ground running in contributing to an NIH-funded project that employs neuroimaging and phenotypic assessments to characterize the biomarkers and complexities of autism spectrum disorder. This position presents an exciting opportunity for someone with expertise in socioemotional development to work with diverse populations to understand how various factors contribute to the understanding of self and emotions.  The successful candidate will develop a rigorous research program that contributes to, and complements, ongoing studies in the center of typical and atypical neurocognitive development. The incumbent will report to Dr. Kevin Pelphrey, and will be expected to work collaboratively with other team members (i.e., faculty students, staff) while conducting research projects in the Center.

The Center for Healthy Brain Development is a multidisciplinary research center dedicated to identifying the cognitive, genetic, emotional and neural processes associated with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We apply theories and tools from psychology, biology, and neuroscience to evaluate how these biomarkers can serve to improve diagnosis, treatment and outcomes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We work closely with these individuals and their families to maximize the translational impact of our research findings.

Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in neuroscience, psychology or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated research experience with diverse developmental populations including preschool and school-aged children, adolescents, and adults.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple research projects and trainees effectively with keen attention to detail and rigor.
  • Training and experience spanning multiple academic disciplines (e.g., developmental psychology, biology, or neuroscience) with both breadth and depth in  topics (e.g., socioemotional development, social behavior, social cognition, or emotion construction) that are relevant to the emotional development of children, adolescents, and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Knowledge of and experience with data acquisition, management, and analysis in neuroimaging and epigenetics in pediatric and adolescent populations.
  • Experience in participatory research methods and/or with quantitative, qualitative, and/or mixed-methods research approaches.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Training or experience coding in R, Matlab and/or Python.
