Job Summary

The Postdoctoral Fellow’s responsibilities will include: conducting mostly quantitative data analyses and writing papers as lead or co-author, presenting results at scientific meetings, developing new research ideas linked to the general project themes, contributing to grant writing, and actively participating in collaborative research meetings.

Individuals are strongly encouraged to apply if they have training and research experience with analysis of data from large cross-sectional surveys, panel studies, and experimental and quasi-experimental intervention designs focused on Latino and/or immigrant health. Candidates should also have a strong interest in furthering their expertise and publications in the area of Latino and immigrant health.

Essential Functions

  • The Fellow will work on two NIH-funded R01 grants. One of them is Project Migrante, an observatory of health and access to services among migrants traveling through the Mexico – U.S. border region. This project consists of a series of surveys dating back to 2009 that have gathered data on the health status, health behaviors, and contextual determinants of health among Mexican and other Latin American migrant flows converging on the Norther Mexican border region. Different surveys have emphasized HIV risk, chronic disease, mental health, and substance use. This project is led by Dr. Ana Martinez-Donate, Professor of Community Health and Prevention at Drexel University (www.martinez-donate.weebly.com).
  • The second project is CRISOL Mente, a community-engaged, multi-level intervention to reduce mental health disparities among Latino communities in Philadelphia, PA. The intervention includes a lay health worker (LHW)-based component to connect community members to free, culturally-tailored mental health services at two community clinics; an LHW-driven social marketing campaign to increase awareness and reduce stigma related to mental health; and coalition building activities to strengthen the capacity of Latino-serving organizations providing mental health services to Latino communities in the area. This project is co-led by Dr. Ana Martinez-Donate and Dr. Mariana Lazo, Associate Research Professor at the Dornsife School of Public Health, Drexel University.
  • Under the mentorship from Drs. Martinez-Donate and Lazo, the Fellow will focus on analyzing quantitative and qualitative data from these projects as well as from previous studies that informed them. The Fellow will also focus heavily on manuscript writing and other dissemination activities. They will have the opportunity to lead publications and develop their own research ideas, as well as contribute as a co-author to publications led by other researchers. The position will provide ample opportunities to network and collaborate with other investigators in both the U.S. and Mexico.
  • The Fellow will be housed in the Department of Community Health & Prevention, in the Drexel Dornsife School of Public Health, which offers unique mentoring and community-engagement opportunities. The Fellow with also have the opportunity to engage with the Urban Health Collaborative. The Fellow will meet weekly or biweekly with their mentors and members of their research teams. Financial support may be available for travel to present results at scientific meetings.

  • PhD or Doctorate in epidemiology, demography, sociology, or related

  • Proficient writing and verbal communication skills
  • Training and research experience with analysis of data from large cross-sectional surveys, panel studies, and experimental and quasi-experimental intervention designs focused on Latino and/or immigrant health.
  • Keen interest in furthering their expertise and publications in the area of Latino and immigrant health.
