Independence Community College (ICC) is seeking applications for the tenure-track position of Associate Professor of Physical Science. Independence Community College, a small, rural, residential community college in southeast Kansas, serves approximately 1,000 full- and part-time students each year. Position Summary Responsible for performing a wide variety of duties, including the following: teaching undergraduate physical science courses as part of both general education and a prescribed program of study.

Qualifications Master’s Degree in Physics or closely related field or a master’s degree in a related field with 18 graduate credits in the concentration. The applicant’s degree must be from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Preferred qualifications include two or more years of community college teaching experience, high school teaching experience, experience working with a diverse student body, and experience with assessment.

1. Position generally requires light work with occasional lifting of up to (30) pounds or more, carrying supplies, equipment. 2. This position requires the ability to sit or stand or walk for extended and various periods of time. 3. The ability to effectively learn new computer programs and applications as necessary; the ability to effectively troubleshoot changing computer software issues. 4. The ability to communicate clearly with small or large groups of people, with an excellent comprehension of the English language, is essential. 5. Work is generally performed in an indoor setting, in an office or a classroom as directed, using a commonly used technology and resources to facilitate instruction. 6. Provide own transportation to and from campus, and appropriate licensing to operate college vehicles on recruiting trips.

Position Information The Associate Professor of Physical Science is a full time, 9-month tenure-track faculty position with benefits. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. The instructor reports to the VP for Academic Affairs as part of the Math and Sciences Division at Independence Community College. Anticipated Start date for the position is August 9, 2023.

Primary Responsibilities 1. Teaching areas include, but are not limited to: Physics I and II, Physical Science, Astronomy, Engineering Physicsand other courses based on credentials. 5-10 hours of load could be made up of Algebra courses. 2. Availability during posted office hours for student advisement and academic assistance. Encouraging student retention, continuity, progress in coursework and program, and student success. 3. Responsible for working with other faculty on learner and program outcome monitoring of courses and program(s). 4. Work with other instructors and college personnel to promote ICC and the curricula offerings. 5. Fiscally responsible for assisting in budget development, budget implementation, and control necessary to deliver instructional programs in an efficient and effective manner to provide access and quality learning experiences. 6. Assist in development of new programming, including funds development, recruitment, curriculum development and revision. 7. Maintain and enhance teaching excellence through ongoing professional development by participation through in-service training, workshops, seminars, travel, and publication. 8. Provide input in the college’s organizational shared governance structure through involvement in committees, councils and supportive activities related to the development and enhancement of the college mission and strategies. 9. Provide a positive learning environment committed to ICC student success by being receptive to various learning modalities (e.g. on-line, video, accelerated, and hybrid) found in the comprehensive community college setting. 10. Provide information and assist with external reporting for accreditation, governmental, and state agencies. Complete or provide requested input for reports for external agencies as required. 11. Work with the instructional team to provide outcomes assessment, follow-up, and improvement(s).
General Responsibilities 1. Complete reports and communications in a timely manner for internal and external agencies. 2. Maintain availability based on the needs of the department. 3. Ensure the security of all ICC property under the supervision of this role. 4. Illustrate clarity of thought and expression in oral and written communications. 5. Exemplify the ability to work with a diverse student population. 6. Communicate effectively with sensitivity to student learning styles and developmental needs. 7. Validate responsible work habits through collaborative and collegial social interactions. 8. Adhere to general rules of safety, procedures, and ethical job standards. 9. Present expertise in content area and keep abreast of advancements in the domain physics, astronomy, and physical science.
