Job Summary

The Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the external Parkland College property/grounds, including but not limited to landscaping, parking areas, signs, sidewalks and sports fields.

The Groundskeeper works on a schedule established by the Manager of Buildings and Grounds. Emergency events, including snow and ice removal, occasionally necessitate overtime and an altered work schedule. Seasonal periods require the Groundskeeper to serve on 24 hour call notice. The Groundskeeper serves on a self directed work team and is responsible for coordinating efforts with other members of the team.

This position is a Full-Time, 12-month, Professional Support Staff appointment with an annual salary of $29,744.00.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain the lawns by mowing, watering, performing weed control and planting flowers and seed.
  • Remove litter and collecting refuse for disposal.
  • Plant, prune and maintain trees and shrubs.
  • Provide road and surface maintenance such as repairing pot holes and painting parking stripes.
  • Remove snow and ice from driving and pedestrian areas.
  • Conduct routine maintenance of department equipment and the college vehicle fleet from the motor pool.
  • Ability to properly store, handle, apply and dispose of agricultural chemicals used on College property.
  • Replace/post outdoor signs.
  • Maintain records on chemical use, maintenance reports and other issues.
  • Design plantscapes.
  • Report observed problems to appropriate departments for treatment/repair.
  • Supervise and train hourly and student employees.
  • Perform light repairs to equipment and machinery.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Illinois Pesticides Operator's License.
  • Frequent operation of heavy equipment, tools and machinery requires unassisted lifting of 50 pounds.
  • Verbal and mathematical abilities sufficient to properly mix and dispense chemicals, produce reports and communicate effectively.
  • Functional ability in the use of grounds equipment and knowledge of horticulture planning and maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Driver's License and insurability to drive for the College.
  • Continuing education or courses in horticulture, landscape design or a related field, especially at the associate degree level.
  • Prior experience of two (2) years in grounds maintenance with a park district, golf course, campus, or similar environment.
  • Prior experience maintaining and caring for athletic field turf and facilities.
