Job Description:

This position requires the successful candidate to develop an independent research program, working in collaboration with EPI member faculty. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in microbiology and molecular biology and will develop and oversee qualification and validation studies as related to ecology, genetic clustering and virulence of major BSL2 and BSL3 bacterial and viral pathogens.

The successful candidate will work with other UF faculty, students, and staff to provide training on molecular techniques and BSL3 laboratory operation and assist with the genetic characterization of BSL2 and BSL3 pathogens. He/she will serve as a technical resource in these areas for the Institute and work cooperatively with the Emerging Pathogens Director and Associate Directors, internal and external collaborators, and industrial and research sponsors. The candidate will work with the EPI Associate Directors for Research Initiatives, and Research Resources in submission of proposals to develop strategies for implementing new methodologies, products, and services, and contribute to the operation of research specimen repositories including the maintenance of databases.  Projects may include work outside of the United States, including development of international BSL3 training programs; prior experience with international BSL3 training is highly desirable.  Responsibilities will also include development of SOPs for pathogen related activities at BSL2 and BSL3 security levels, writing and publishing manuscripts, and developing research budgets for proposal submissions, including methodology sections for publications.  The successful candidate will also be expected to attend institutional required training and participating in program meetings and conferences, and other duties, as required.

Minimum Requirements:

The successful candidate with have a minimum of a master’s degree in molecular biology, molecular genetics, genomics, biochemistry, or a related field and 10 years of experience in work with pathogens at a BSL3 level.

Ph.D. in molecular biology, molecular genetics, genomics, biochemistry, or a related field, with at least 6 years of scientific and managerial experience in biotechnology-related research, including work with pathogens at a BSL3 level, with at least one year of direct experience working in a DNA sequencing or Genomics core at the manager level or above.

The candidate will have a strong track record of working collaboratively leading to peer-reviewed publications, presentations at scientific conferences and extramural funding applications.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • We seek applicants with Ph.D. degrees, significant postdoctoral experience, and an established record of accomplishment in research and training, including experience in international BSL3 training.
  • At least ten years of relevant research experience in BSL2 and BSL3 research techniques.
  • Knowledge of the UF system and the requirements and approvals for working in a BSL3 research laboratory
