Research Scientist in Orthopaedic Surgery

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia seeks applications for a Research Scientist position at the postdoctoral level to study the pathogenesis and potential therapeutics of intervertebral disc degeneration. Candidates must have a PhD or MD/PhD in molecular biology and bioengineering-related fields. In addition to experience in molecular therapy, the candidates should have backgrounds in cell culture, in vitro assays, microfluidics, animal handling, and histological studies. Small animal surgical experience is preferred, and knowledge and experience with immunostaining and RNA work are also desirable. Effective spoken and written communication skills are essential. Proficiency in computer programs for data compilation and evaluation is required. 

This is a restricted position contingent upon the continued availability of funding.  The successful candidate will receive a one-year appointment. Contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funds, the appointment is renewable in one-year increments up to three years with the possibility of extension for two additional years. 

This position will remain open until filled. 

Minimum Requirements

Education: Candidates must have a PhD or MD/PhD in molecular biology and bioengineering-related fields. 
Experience:

• This position requires that candidates have: Experience in molecular biology; 
• Backgrounds in cell culture, in vitro assays, and histological studies; 
• Effective spoken and written communication skills;
• Proficiency in computer programs for data compilation and evaluation and advanced Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required. 
• Candidates with animal surgical experience are preferred.

Licensure:   None

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings, and programs. Some standing may be required while conducting experiments
