Postdoctoral Scientist - Li Lab - Cancer Institute

Job Description

At Cedars-Sinai, postdoctoral scientists and other junior researchers fulfill a critical role in expanding the horizons of medical knowledge through biomedical research. By hosting more than 100 postdocs, who conduct vital research and receive advanced training with expert faculty mentors, Cedars-Sinai supports the ongoing medical education process that continues beyond PhD/MD graduation

Cancer incidence and mortality are generally higher in males than in females, but its underlying biology remains elusive. Bladder cancer is the poster child of cancer sex differences, having male-to-female risk ratios ranking 1st in mortality and 2nd in incidence. Our lab specializes in using cutting edge -omics technologies, a wide range of innovative animal cancer models, and organoids to elucidate the biological mechanisms of sex differences in bladder cancer; we recently published several works that pioneer new concepts on sex as a biological variable in cancers (DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.aar5598 ; DOI: 10.1126/sciimmunol.abq2630 ).

We are inviting talented and interested candidates to join our scientific endeavor at the Cedars-Sinai Cancer Institute of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles—the new home of a well-established research program that first began at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Ongoing projects are examining the effects of genetics, epigenetics, immunity and microbiota on the sex and gender disparities in bladder cancer. We also have projects in benign urologic diseases such as bladder regeneration/repair. Successful candidates will have opportunities to hone research, critical thinking, scientific writing, and leadership skills, while taking part in leading a new and budding field of cancer research. This position will also provide incredible opportunities to work on translational disease models with the support of talented clinicians and researchers specializing in cancer biology, epigenome, metabolism, aging, tumor microenvironment, etc.

The Li Lab is seeking a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Scientist who can work independently while maintaining close collaboration with the Principal Investigator and other Research Scientists. The successful candidate must be able to:

  • make significant contributions to project development, experimental design, data collection and interpretation,
  • present findings within and outside the lab including departmental and national meetings,
  • first author and co-author original research manuscripts. Technical expertise in epigenetics, metabolism, immunity, and/or aging is preferred.

  • Essential job Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Designs and performs experiments
    • Analyzes, interprets, compiles, and summarizes data
    • Drafts and publishes findings as first- and co-author
    • Researches, develops and implements new laboratory procedures and protocols
    • Assists in preparation of grant proposals and presentations
    • Performs routine and complex laboratory procedures throughout the training period
    • Takes on specific supervisory activities, provide administrative leadership, and/or technical expertise when needed
