About the Department
 

The Bakkour Memory and Decision Lab within the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago is a research lab focused on understanding the neural and cognitive mechanisms by which memory and decision-making interact. We use the tools of cognitive neuroscience, namely fMRI, eye tracking, and computational modeling to elucidate the computations that the brain performs when humans draw on their experience to make everyday decisions.
The Memory and Decision lab is focused on understanding the cognitive and neural mechanisms by which relational memory guides and is influenced by decision-making. To conduct our research, we use a combination of the tools of cognitive neuroscience; namely fMRI, eyetracking, computational modeling, and neuropsychological studies with patients that have known cognitive deficits (e.g., Amnesia, Parkinson’s Disease, Anorexia Nervosa). Job Summary
 

The job provides technical support activities related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.
The Bakkour Memory and Decision Laboratory in the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago (PI: Akram Bakkour) is seeking a full-time Lab Manager to join the lab. This is a particularly exciting opportunity for someone who wants to be part of a growing team where they are valued for their scientific as well as their managerial contribution.

Responsibilities

  • The Lab Manager will contribute to the lab both administratively and scientifically.

  • Help develop, maintain, and oversee compliance policies and protocols (IRBs), order lab/office supplies, recruit participants (including patients in coordination with clinical units), maintain participant records (e.g., consent forms, screening forms), maintain the lab website, schedule lab meetings, and perform other day-to-day lab management tasks.

  • In addition to these administrative responsibilities, this individual will also conduct research under the guidance and supervision of the Principal Investigator, Postdoctoral scholars, and/or graduate students in the lab.

  • The Lab Manager will have the opportunity to conduct an independent project (which will involve conceptualization, data collection, analysis, presentation of results, writing, and paper submission).

  • Other research responsibilities include training and assisting lab members with data collection and technical troubleshooting.

  • This position will provide useful training for individuals who are considering graduate school.

  • Assists with the installation, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.

  • May assist recruiting and scheduling research subjects; assisting with developing or amending study protocols; assisting with developing data collection tools; assisting with building databases; and providing general administrative support. Is developing skills in research techniques or methods, regulatory policies and procedures, and relevant scientific field.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Prior research experience (especially in a cognitive neuroscience lab studying memory and/or decision-making).

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Candidates must have strong technical qualifications including proficiency in programming (e.g., Python, JavaScript, MATLAB), working knowledge of statistics (e.g., running basic statistical tests in R, Python, Julia), and fluency in office productivity software (e.g., word processor, slide presentations, spreadsheets).

Preferred Competencies

  • Candidates must be organized and detail-oriented, able to exercise good judgment and take initiative, able to work independently as well as collaboratively, and possess excellent communication skills.

  • Knowledge of human research protocols (IRBs, consent forms, HIPAA) is preferred, but not required.

  • The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal. The start date is flexible.
