Senior Research Scientist

Job Description


The Abounader Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology (MIC) in the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a Senior Research Scientist to investigate the molecular basis of brain cancer and develop and test new experimental therapies. The candidate will lead projects on non-coding RNAs and cell signaling in gliomas. Additional duties include assisting and training others in the laboratory, participating in research conferences, and preparing figures and draft text for publications, and grant applications. Salary will be commensurate with experience and will include fringe benefits as offered by UVA Human Resources.

The Abounader lab prioritizes collaboration, mentorship, and ethical, rigorously conducted research. The Department of MIC is a highly interdisciplinary environment with an outstanding commitment to research and education. Candidates will be immersed in the robust intellectual environment offered by the MIC Department and the UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in cancer biology, RNA biology or related discipline.

  • At least 3 years of full-time postdoctoral research experience.

  • A good publication record with first authorships in major scientific journals.

  • Experience in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and animal surgery.

Physical Demands

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
