Research Associate, Department of Neuroscience

Job Description

The Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks a Full-time Research Associate to conduct research in the laboratory of Mary Peace McRae.  The McRae Lab studies the interplay between HIV and opioids on factors that may impact antiretroviral efficacy within the brain, including the blood-brain barrier, drug transport proteins, antiretroviral concentrations, and immune cell recruitment into the brain.

The candidate will have the opportunity to integrate functional assays as well as basic cellular and molecular approaches aimed at elucidating how opioid abuse may alter HIV outcomes in the CNS. The candidate will join a multi-investigator team that utilizes pharmacological, immunological, and behavioral strategies to explore opioid-HIV interactions in murine (in vitro and in vivo ) and human (in vitro ) models.  Cutting-edge imaging facilities, which include structured illumination and multiphoton microscopy are available.

The incumbent will participate in NIH-funded research projects and get comprehensive training in translational therapeutics. The successful applicant will need to be interested in mentoring and supporting graduate students and have the skills to do so, as well as work in collaboration with a larger and more diverse group of scientists working on the project at other sites. They will participate in the experimental design, execution, analysis, and evaluation of ongoing funded research aims in lab. There is also an expectation that the postdoc will participate in general housekeeping of lab and ordering of reagents. The candidate will be provided with significant training in the disciplines with which they are less familiar and will receive significant mentoring to facilitate their transition to an independent research career.

The postdoc will be expected to work independently as well as in team setting. They will generate and present data in publication ready format and will write manuscripts describing research results.  In addition to the above, other responsibilities may be assigned.

The position is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.

Qualified candidates must have:

Doctoral degree

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance. The position will remain open until filled.  This is an exempt-level, benefitted position. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.  A health screening is required. This position is located in Charlottesville, VA.
