The Palm Mycology Lab at Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center (FLREC ), University of Florida, in Davie, Florida is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on fungal diseases of palms, especially trunk rot of palms caused by the fungal pathogen Thielaviopsis paradoxa. The T. paradoxa fungal complex consists of soilborne fungi that are known as serious pathogens on numerous plant hosts, including monocot plants like sugarcane, pineapple, and palms.

Speci?c duties: The postdoctoral researcher will develop the palm-Thielaviopsis interaction as a model system to dissect host-pathogen interaction in palms. This position is geared towards generating genetic and genomic resources to uncover genes required by Thielaviopsis paradoxa to cause disease on palms. The postdoctoral researcher will investigate the utility of Agrobacterium-mediated transformation as a method to identify genetic pathways required for pathogenicity in T. paradoxa. The project will provide avenues for genomic investigations such as whole genome sequencing, assembly, and annotation, transcriptomics, as well as development of molecular tools for disease diagnostics. The candidate will also have the opportunity to engage in extension activities like presenting at grower workshops and ?eld days. The candidate is expected to publish in international refereed journals.

Appointment: This position is initially funded for 1 year and could be extended depending upon additional funding. The salary for this position will be $47,476/year depending on experience, plus postdoctoral associate bene?ts of UF. Anticipated start date is late April to early May 2023.

Minimum Requirements:

Candidates must have completed a PhD within the past 5 years in Plant Pathology, Molecular Biology, Plant Biology, Agronomy, Horticulture, Forestry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related disciplines. Ideal candidates must have prior experience with fungal pathogens of plants, host-pathogen interactions, fungal transformation, and large-scale forward genetics, mutagenesis, and mutant screening projects. The candidate should have a strong publication record, excellent oral and written communication skills and be a team player. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.  Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional experience with next- generation sequencing, library preparation, bioinformatics, and statistical analysis of microbial datasets would be a strong plus for this position.
