Research Associate

Job Description


The Center for Public Health Genomics at the University of Virginia is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on collaborative projects at the cutting edge of human genetics and genomics research under the supervision of Dr. Charles R. Farber.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will join a collegial and productive research team focused on the genetic analysis of complex skeletal traits and osteoporosis.

  • The candidate will lead our efforts to generate and analyze population-scale transcriptomics datasets on human bone and bone cells to inform genome-wide association studies for bone mass.

  • The candidate will be expected to utilize a wide-range of analytical tools, including genome-wide association, expression Quantitative Trait Locus (eQTL) analysis, causal modeling, co-expression network analysis, Bayesian network analysis, among others.

  • This is a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative project; thus, the candidate will be expected to work well both independently and in a team setting.

  • The candidate will be responsible for writing manuscripts describing their work, advising graduate and undergraduate students and presenting at national and international conferences.

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. or related degree in Biostatistics, Genetics, Epidemiology, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of statistics and genetics

  • Experience with statistical software (R, Splus or Matlab)

  • Strong work ethic

  • Ability to work independently combined with willingness to work in a highly interactive and collegial group

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.  

  • Working knowledge of existing tools for genetic analysis and data management; C, C++, and/or Perl programming skills

  • Experience working in a Unix / Linux environment.

This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
