About the Department
 

One of the first departments founded at the University of Chicago was the Department of Chemistry. Since then, The University of Chicago has been the recipient of more than 73 Nobel Prize recipients, 15 of which came from the Department of Chemistry. Our current faculty have considerable strength in inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, as well as in interdisciplinary research that delves into biology, physics, and materials science.


Job Summary
 

The Research Professional will be leading translational research projects under the mentorship of Dr. Chuan He. The He Lab develops novel genome-wide epigenetic and epitranscriptomic mapping technologies with direct translational applications. The background needed to further develop the diagnostic assay include molecular biology, biochemistry, chemical biology, genomics, and bioinformatics analysis. This position will conduct research activities that concern RNA modifications in early mouse development and will oversee others who work on the project.

Responsibilities

  • Operates in a highly collaborative mode with all members of the group and with others in the Institute and with off-campus collaborators.

  • Under the general supervision of the principal investigator, supervise and/or assist with the complex technical duties in a laboratory doing non-clinical research.

  • Compile documents and assists with interpreting presentations or reports stemming from scientific contributions in the laboratory.

  • Gives frequent internal and occasional external talks and tutorials on the thinking and work progress.

  • Contributes new ideas and new directions to the research agenda.

  • Collaborate with postdoctoral scholars, and mentor and supervise an undergraduate within the group.

  • Applying genomics tools developed in the He laboratory to map various RNA modifications during mouse early development.

  • Developing new in vivo and in vitro models to utilize newly developed sequencing techniques to dissect biological processes.

  • Oversee mouse colonies, including administrative expertise.

  • Studying and summarizing findings from animal models in order to formulate a translational approach to analyze biological mechanisms of the disease(s) of interest.

  • Design clinical assays and implement regulatory-based design control.

  • Collaborate with clinicians to design studies utilizing clinical specimens to further refine the assay for clinical needs.

  • Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Contributes to facilitating and promoting a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.

  • Leads the contributions to scientific writing and publications, including protocols and grants.

  • Performs other related work as needed.

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:         

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related field.

Experience:       

  • Molecular Biology.

  • Signi?cant publications in research of epigenetics.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Basic computer proficiency including computer programs and standard laboratory equipment.

  • Relevant scientific fields.

  • Regulatory policies and procedures.

Preferred Competencies

  • Demonstrate problem-solving, organization, analytical, and coordination skills including attention to detail.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to read and comprehend scientific and technical literature, and methods to stay abreast of developments in the field.

  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team and interact with a diverse workforce.

  • Ability to think creatively.

  • Ability to articulate their scienti?c discoveries both in written publications and in talks.
