We are seeking to appoint a Registrar/Senior Registrar/Veterinary Specialist in in Small Animal Medicine to join a team of outstanding world-class clinical specialist colleagues at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Sydney.

They will be responsible for providing best practice veterinary small animal medicine services at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital Sydney (UVTHS). They will take an active role in the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students working in the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. They will also be expected to assist in the development and implementation of the UVTHS and Unit Strategic Plan and actively contribute to its management, including contribution to the financial viability of the unit. The position will help to sustain and enhance a caseload of animals referred for management of medical problems and provide small animal medicine services for the purpose of teaching Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and postgraduate students and residents in the UVTH-Sydney. They will also assist clinicians in other small animal disciplines with case management and assist in undergraduate teaching as clinical instructors.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • provide an effective service for small animal medicine referral cases from both external and internal referral bases
  • supervise undergraduate and postgraduate clinical trainees on clinical rotations
  • take a leadership role with the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and residents, including practical instruction and demonstrations at the Sydney campus
  • actively contribute to the management of the medicine unit
  • provide support for cases from other clinical services within the University Veterinary Teaching Hospitals
  • participate in after-hours on-call roster.

About you

As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Registrar/Senior Registrar/Veterinary Specialist in in Small Animal Medicine as follows:

Registrar in in Small Animal Medicine (HEO Level 7) is a veterinarian working with responsibility for his/her own clinical work and outcomes; and who is involved with clinical instruction, contributes to consultancy and/or research led by senior staff and provides high quality referral clinical services. In addition, you must have:

  • a degree in veterinary science registrable in New South Wales, Australia.
  • completed a residency training program in small animal medicine or similar advanced training
  • excellent clinical skills
  • experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and providing clinical instruction.
  • a willingness to supervise resident training for postgraduate specialist qualifications in small animal medicine
  • an ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • the ability to show initiative and manage competing deadlines
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Senior Registrar in in Small Animal Medicine, (HEO Level 8) is a veterinarian with responsibilities within a specific area of clinical practice, and who provides leadership in his/her chosen discipline as well as being involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training programs. In addition to the requirements for a Registrar position, you must have:

  • completed a residency training program in small animal medicine and have greater than 12 months clinical experience following the residency program
  • a postgraduate research qualification (PhD) or near completion, in the area in small animal medicine (desired but not required).

Veterinary Specialist in in Small Animal Medicine (HEO level 9) is a veterinarian with at least partial responsibility for the management of a unit or division, including the management of a range of staff working within the relevant discipline or sub-discipline, who has, in addition to the requirements for a Registrar position:

  • Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists or a Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine or the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine that enables registration as a Specialist in Small Animal Medicine in NSW.

The commencement level will be determined based on the candidate's skills, experience and knowledge.
