The Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism has an exciting opportunity for a Post Doctoral Associate to work on the UHealth Campus. The Post Doctoral Associate performs scientific research and studies under the supervision of managing staff. Moreover, the Post Doctoral Associate promotes institutional recognition through literal contributions to the scientific community. The Post Doctoral Associate position will support Dr. Alejandro Caicedo with his investigations that focus on the role autonomic innervation plays in regulating hormone secretion from the human pancreatic islet.

  • Identify the anatomical and functional innervation of the human pancreatic islet using an experimental model in which human islets are transplanted into the eye of immune deficient mice for non-invasive longitudinal in vivo imaging.

  • In this humanized mouse model, stimulate the autonomic nervous input to transplanted human islets and measure its effects on hormone secretion and glucose metabolism.

  • Using this humanized mouse model, identify the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which autonomic nervous input controls hormone secretion from the human islet in vivo.

  • Designing, performing and analyzing experiments in collaboration with Dr. Alejandro Caicedo.

  • A broad range of activities will be expected, including noninvasive in vivo imaging of islet cell biology, in vivo Ca2+ imaging, and surgical procedures to manipulate nervous input to the anterior chamber of the eye.

  • Reviewing relevant scientific literature; preparing written reports of experimental results and keeping detailed laboratory books.

  • Record and document the collected data and perform analyses by employing provided analytical tools.  

  • Prepare manuscripts for publication. Contribute to decisions on experimental approaches, data analysis strategies and publication strategies.

  • Weekly implementation of projections, in consultation with Dr. Alejandro Caicedo.

  • Islet culture and maintenance, mouse colony maintenance, dissection and physiological experiments with rodents.

  • Set-up instruments, material, apparatus and operate laboratory equipment required for specific assays.  

  • Assist in solving problems related to equipment and data analysis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • MD or Ph.D. in relevant field

  • No prior experience required

  • Strong scientific background in cell biology and diabetes preferred.

  • Experience in noninvasive in vivo imaging is highly desired.

  • Candidate must have demonstrated scientific problem-solving ability and creativity.

  • Excellent communication skills and publication records.

  • Must be able to work in a highly collaborative manner.
