Essential functions (job duties):

JOB PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, provide scientific and technical assistance to
complete laboratory based, clinical or population science research.  May assist in writing research protocols and in manuscript preparation.  Design and perform research protocols independently or as directed through training in more difficult or specialized procedures to meet the needs of the research protocol.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform laboratory based scientific techniques or clinical/population science (human subjects) research.  Design and perform experiments, recruit participants for studies by developing surveys and interviewing candidates.  Participate in implementing research objectives, ensuring compliance with all legal, regulatory and protocol guidelines.  Assist staff with experiments/research protocols as required. Communicate with principal investigator and Postdoctoral scholars/fellows on the status of research.

Collect and log laboratory results, clinical outcomes and/or survey data.  Evaluate and perform data analysis using graphs, charts or tables to highlight the key points of the research results collected in accordance with the research protocols as stipulated. Proofread and edit research data and documents to ensure accuracy.

Assist principal investigator with writing methods and summarizing/organizing data  to be used in preparing and presenting presentations for professional, scientific and academic conferences and submittal to academic and scholarly peer-reviewed journals.

Maintain the laboratory work areas including routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as required.  Order and organize required research supplies and records.  Maintain cleanliness and organization of work station.

Perform other related duties as assigned.


Unique duties:

The Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics at Wayne State University invites applications for a grant-funded clinical Research Assistant position to support a study in cancer genetic counseling. The purpose of the clinical Research Assistant position is to support the operational activities of a NIH-funded clinic-based research project by working closely with the Principal Investigators. The overall goal of this research is to compare and contrast the nature of cancer genetic counseling encounters and patient-centered outcomes between Black and White patients in the naturalistic clinical setting. The Research Assistant is required to be familiar with all aspects of the research protocol in order to provide support for the overall research operations as well as day-to-day research activities. Note: This position is restricted and continuation is dependent upon grant funding. The primary responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: 1. Research Operations: Communicating and coordinating with on-site and off-site research teams and appropriate individuals at data collection site; communicating with the WSU IRB (as well as external IRBs as needed); assisting with research protocol updates as needed; managing the collection and storage of study data; coordinating transmission of study data to off-site research team; managing and maintaining all research equipment; maintaining and storing all study documents. 2. Participant Recruitment: Serving as the first point of contact for all questions and concerns about the study; screening participants virtually, over the phone, and potentially in-person using study inclusion/exclusion criteria; describing the study in detail to potentially eligible participants and answering any questions they may have. 3. Data Collection: Administering study instruments to participants both virtually and in-person; attending virtual, telephone and in-person clinic visits to collect recorded clinic sessions. 4. Administrative Activities: Logging daily research activities; scheduling and coordinating research team meetings as needed, including taking meeting minutes.


Qualifications:

Education   Bachelor's degree
Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study, preferred.    Requires advanced knowledge
predominantly intellectual in character in a field of science or learning acquired by a prolonged
course of specialized intellectual instruction.  
Experience   Entry level (less that a year of job-related experience)
Experience performing basic research techniques or interacting with human subjects, preferred. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to work independently.  Ability to analyze, summarize and interpret research findings and
data in reports and spreadsheets and communicate results. Knowledge of scientific integrity
principles. Excellent time management and organization skills.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative environment.  Microsoft office software skills.


Preferred qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Public Health, Health Sciences, or related field or equivalent training and experience · Demonstrated record of dependability and reliability · Demonstrated record of working with individuals from diverse demographic characteristics · Excellent written and oral communication skills · Strong organizational skills and ability to set goals · Proven record of working independently · Proven record of successfully managing multiple projects and meeting multiple deadlines simultaneously · Working knowledge of computer programs and systems, especially Microsoft Office and Google Suite · Working knowledge of virtual meetings platforms, such as Zoom Experience working on or coordinating research projects involving human subjects Experience working in a healthcare environment Experience with an IRB including protocol submission, revision, and approval processes Strong leadership and decision-making skills Service orientation, commitment to excellence and professional growth Basic knowledge of research protocols, participant screening processes, research tools, and confidentiality
