Physician Assistant (TEMP) (PA) Mott C&W Hospital 7 East Inpatient Unit: Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT

Job Description

Responsibilities*

  • Provide inpatient care to pediatric and young adult patients admitted on 7 East inpatient unit on Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant (PBMT) and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (PHO) service.
  • Perform and document medical histories, physical exams, and telephone conversations.
  • Review laboratory and radiographic tests results and interface with medical staff and patients regarding results and plan of care.
  • Direct patient care and management including initial evaluation, admission, and ongoing patient care in collaboration with PBMT and PHO physicians. 
  • Stabilizing and transferring patients to the Pediatric ICU in collaboration with PBMT/ PHO team, if indicated.
  • Patient and family counseling and support as necessary.
  • Collaboration with and referrals to other health care providers as necessary. 
  • Support clinical research mission of the PBMT/ PHO programs, including care of patients on clinical trials.  
  • Perform procedures including lumbar punctures, if needed.
  • Contribute to the development, modification and interpretation of pediatric hematology/oncology guidelines, policies, and procedures, including quality improvement activities. 
  • Collaboration of patient care coordination.  
  • Attend continuing education/staff development programs to maintain knowledge of current literature. 

**Roles and responsibilities may be periodically adjusted as determined by the needs of the Cancer Center Clinical Program.

Required Qualifications*

NP

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
  • Current specialty certification to practice as a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner 
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • 1 year experience practicing as an acute care pediatric APP
  • Two (2) or more years of clinical experience with pediatric bone marrow transplant, or hematology/oncology patients. 
  •  Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS certification
  • PALS certification

PA

  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant  (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required  
  • 1 year experience practicing as an acute care pediatric APP
  • Two (2) or more years of clinical experience with pediatric bone marrow transplant, or hematology/oncology patients. 
  •  Current DEA registration required
  • AHA approved BLS certification
  • PALS certification

Desired Qualifications*

  • Two (2) or more years of experience practicing as an Acute Care Pediatric APP
  • Four (4) or more clinical experience with pediatric bone marrow transplant or hematology/oncology patients
  • Demonstrated high level of critical thinking and medical knowledge by using current medical information and scientific evidence for patient care.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills, organization and problem solving skills.

Work Schedule

Hours/ week: TEMP including weekend and holiday requirements.

Shift: Night shift with occasional rotation to days

This job opening is for a Unit-Based Temporary PA position with Mott C&W Hospital 7 East Inpatient Unit: Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT
* Please note that these positions do not qualify for UMHS benefits and specific terms and conditions of employment are negotiated at the department level.
These positions are not covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine.
