    Sneddon Lab – Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist
SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY – Cell and Tissue Biology

The Department of Cell and Tissue Biology is seeking a highly motivated full-time non-faculty Academic Specialist to join The Sneddon Lab. Selected candidates will be appointed at the level of Junior, Assistant, Associate or Full Specialist depending on qualifications.

Founded in 1881, the UCSF School of Dentistry has striven to educate the leading practitioners, scholars and faculty members of the next generation. As a leading institution of oral and craniofacial health, our educational programs have grown to include, in addition to our DDS programs, an array of PhD, post-graduate and residency programs. Our student dentists, residents and faculty handle over 120,000 patient visits a year in our comprehensive UCSF Dental Center, and our students staff numerous community-based externship sites. The school is one of the top oral and craniofacial research enterprises in the world, ranked the top dental school in the country in research funding from the National Institutes of Health for 25 years, and home to several leading translational research programs.

The Department of Cell and Tissue Biology (CTB) is a basic science department within the School of Dentistry. The department was established in 2005 and includes 15 faculty with primary appointments and five faculty with secondary appointments. Additionally, the department is home to numerous postdoctoral fellows as well as graduate students in programs ranging from Biomedical Sciences, Tetrad and Biophysics to Developmental & Stem Cell Biology and Oral & Craniofacial Sciences. Faculty research interests include cell biology mechanisms relevant to cytoskeletal dynamics, development, metabolism, cancer, immunology and neurobiology.

    Description:
The primary focus of the Sneddon laboratory is pancreatic development and type 1 diabetes, and we employ the tools of stem cell biology, developmental biology, genomics, and tissue engineering. The candidate will be expected to contribute to ongoing work in these areas, with specific duties including human embryonic stem cell culture, mouse husbandry and transplantations, FACS analysis, and genomics techniques. The position represents an opportunity to be at the cutting edge of translational research in a highly collaborative scientific environment.

Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-today lab operations, perform general lab duties, and act as a supportive and positive lab citizen.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
    • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
    • Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
    • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
    • Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
    • Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or a bachelor’s degree with three or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant rank.
    • Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Associate rank.
    • Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or at least ten or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Full rank.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Prior experience with culturing human embryonic stem cells.
    • Prior experience with mouse handling.
    • Prior experience with bioinformatics analysis, such as single-cell RNA-sequencing data.

A 2-year commitment is preferred. Depending on performance and workload, opportunities for independent research, mentorship of other trainees, and scientific writing will be available.
