The Opportunity

The Institute for Simulation and Training (IST) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is seeking applicants for a research faculty position. We are looking for a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure earning program director for Applied Systems to oversee research strategy and management functions across a portfolio of sponsored basic and applied modeling and simulation research within the domain. The ideal candidate will have an extensive background in program management, systems engineering, and modeling and simulation in government and industry.

Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Collaborating with other research faculty to develop a synergistic research strategy and project portfolio across multiple principal investigators and colleges/departments.

  • Developing and executing detailed and flexible project plans based on contractual requirements for scope, deliverables, timelines, team resources, information security, etc. Various methodologies, tools, systems, and processes may be employed based on specific requirements. Examples include agile, WBS, earned value management, and others.

  • Assessing and maintaining a team skill matrix to identify and fill gaps based on current and future project requirements.

  • Planning and executing program and project budgets, as well as interfacing with relevant business unit staff (accounting, purchasing, etc.), enterprise systems, and institutional processes.

  • Providing sponsors with detailed project reporting based on specified contractual requirements.

  • Supporting proposal development with input on research scope, budgets, resource commitments, and supporting documentation.

  • Facilitating proposal preparation and submission activities with the SMST proposal coordinator and designated research office personnel.

  • Supporting recruitment pipelines and hiring activities for research faculty, staff, and students in coordination with HR Business Center.

  • Facilitating accurate time and effort tracking across projects based on team timesheet submissions.

  • Ensuring compliance with university and sponsor policies and requirements related to finances, ethics, information security, etc.

  • Facilitating and supporting external communications and marketing with required input on strategy and assets.

  • Supporting opportunities development activities, including events, meetings, and tours with internal and external stakeholders and partners.

  • Coordinating with designated research office personnel to review and approve contract language (e.g., basic research agreements, nondisclosures, intellectual property disclosures, teaming agreements).

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Systems Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited institution at time of application.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years professional experience in the research program focus area.

  • Experience in leading major technology research and development funded applied research projects over the past 5 years.

  • A background in program management, systems engineering, and modeling and simulation in government and industry.

  • Demonstrated experience developing large, multi-year proposals for Federal funding.

  • Experience in DOD or other Federal activities.

  • Ability to attain security clearance.
