Overview
Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Supervising Mental Health Specialist in Acute Services within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.
The Supervising Mental Health Specialist participates as a member of a treatment team in providing patient care and services to adolescent patients and or children (ages 4 years – 21 years). Collaborates with the clinical and administrative leadership of the program offering comprehensive mental health care to patients and their families. Primarily responsible for providing patient care, leadership, training, and supervision to MHS II’s, MHS III’s and MHS IV’s, Activity Assistants II’s, Activity Assistants III’s and Activity Assistants IV’s.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides administrative supervision to Mental Health Specialists and Activity Assistants.
  • Interacts with patients in a therapeutic manner according to their developmental level.
  • Observes patients’ interpersonal behavior indicating knowledge of behavioral norms of each adolescent’s developmental level and participation and interest in their environment in accordance with established policies as monitored by supervisor.
  • Obtains information, formulates and implements a wide range of interventions that best facilitate patients’ well being and growth as monitored by supervisor.
  • Orients and trains junior paraprofessional staff and others in regard to policies and procedures.
  • Maintains cooperative working relationship with others and assumes appropriate leadership functions.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant social, education or health care field, plus one (1) year experience in a relevant health care field.
  • Previous experience with adolescents (ages 4 years – 17 years).
  • Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Activities, Art or Recreational Therapy desirable.
Equipment Utilized
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Employee must be physically active and be on feet most of the day.
  • Duties may involve running and playing active games with children and adolescents (ages 4 years – 17 years).
  • Following training, employee must be physically capable of safely providing personal and 4-point restraint to agitated children.
  • Crowded and moderately noisy conditions with children, adolescents, and staff moving about.

Immunization Requirements


Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees , Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
