Associate Director, Academic CAPS Training Director
Job Summary:
The Associate Director of Training (ADT) is a critical member of the CAPS leadership team, along with the Associate Director of Clinical Operations, the Associate Director of Afterhours Services, and the Director.  The ADT provides support to the CAPS Director, and may serve as Director (with the other Associate Directors) during Director’s absence from the office. Supports Director in promoting the mission of the department and in maintaining a positive team environment. Oversees all aspects of the CAPS training program, including providing supervision and/or training to graduate students from Social Work, Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and Psychiatry programs via didactics, video tape review, live observation and case discussion.  Coordinates CAPS clinical supervisors.  Improves and expands CAPS training program for all disciplines, including completion of American Psychological Association (APA)-accreditation for the doctoral psychology internship program.  Provides counseling services to students with a wide variety of mental health issues, and from very diverse cultural backgrounds. Provides consultation to WSU community regarding students with psychological challenges. Provides outreach/programming on a variety of topics to the WSU community.  Assists with and develops clinical research projects, including program evaluation.
Job Description Details:
Support director in promoting the mission of the department and in maintaining a positive team environment. Assist Associate Director of Clinical Operations in assuming responsibility for administrative duties and decisions when Director is not available, and with a wide variety of administrative duties that have been delegated by the director, including planning, developing, and administering programs and services for CAPS.
Oversee the training of doctoral psychology interns, pre-doctoral psychology practicum students, and master’s level psychology, counseling, and social work interns by coordinating recruitment, managing the selection process, assignment of supervisors, and resolving overall training issues.Serve as training liaison to graduate programs whose students we train.Maintain supervision records and oversee trainee evaluation processes.Provide seminars/didactics and arrange guest presenters.
Develop and maintain broad training program goals and identity. Create and update training program policies and procedures. Coordinate agency-wide training committee, and chair the Psychology Internship Training Committee. Develop and maintain collaborations with area mental health training programs.
Responsible for the full-time doctoral level internship program for clinical and counseling psychologists, including development of policies, recruitment using APPIC national match, oversee hiring of interns, orientation, provide supervision, oversee progress of interns, and implementation of policies related to the program.Serve as agency contact for Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) and Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies (ACCTA) membership. Oversee completion of APA accreditation application process, and once accredited, maintain accreditation including writing self-study, arranging site visits, and completing all other re-accreditation requirements.
Provide individual supervision and mentorship to doctoral-level and master’s level trainees in psychology. Provide group-based supervision for agency trainees from all mental health disciplines.
Maintain a small individual clinical caseload of therapy clients (WSU students). This includes the case management duties of consulting with parents, other CAPS staff, WSU faculty/staff and the consulting psychiatrist when necessary.May also provide group counseling.
Provide appropriate clinical documentation by maintaining case records in accordance with professional, ethical and CAPS departmental standards. Ensure these standards are also maintained by trainees.
Make independent and expedient judgments and decisions on how to proceed with individual clients (for own caseload as well as that of trainees) in the case of crisis intervention, e.g. seriousness of suicide threat, mental status or the need for hospitalization (including 72-hour hold). Provide crisis intervention when necessary on site or when available by phone for consultation and decision-making with campus staff/students.
Provide consultation to faculty, staff and students as needed to assist with understanding of students’ psychological needs. Consult, collaborate and serve as resource to key departments, including Housing & Residential Life, Dean of Students Office, Campus Police, Campus Health Center.
Participate in professional development activities (conferences, workshops, specific skill training, supervision) in order to acquire and maintain required professional license and to maintain high competency/ethical standards of care.
Participate in weekly staff meetings including team supervision and in-services; provide peer supervision/consultation. Serve on agency committees including program evaluation, marketing, and most importantly diversity committees to enhance collaboration with the training program.
Provide outreach to other departments on campus with regard to psychological issues including training for residence life staff, academic presentations, debriefing after a crisis and specific topic programs targeting certain populations upon request. Some outreach/programming activities may occur after traditional office hours and will be managed by using a flexible schedule for that specific day.
The Associate Director of Training may serve on University standing and ad hoc committees and perform related duties as required.
Assist with ongoing CAPS research projects, and develop new ones, including grant applications.Research may have a program evaluation focus (e.g., effectiveness of CAPS services), or could center on a wide variety of diagnoses or topics of interest.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
Doctorate in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an APA-accredited program, with completed APA-accredited internship.
Additional experience in providing supervision and training to graduate level trainees/interns required.
Must be Licensed Psychologist in the State of Michigan, or eligible.
Must have strong administrative, interpersonal, oral and written skills.
Clinical skill in providing crisis counseling; triage and case management; group psychotherapy; individual and couples therapy to clients from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds.


Preferred qualifications:

• Experience working within a college counseling center setting preferred. • Administrative experience in a university or mental health setting preferred.
