Job Description:

The Department of Chemistry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida is seeking a Director of Operations. This position is responsible for oversight and management of fiscal operations, sponsored research, human resources, and facilities in the Department of Chemistry. The department has approximately 50 tenure track faculty members, 10 teaching and research support faculty members, 50 staff members, over 250 graduate students, and more than 80 postdoctoral and other scientific associates. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Oversight of maintenance, construction, and renovation projects in the Department of Chemistry. Certifies the annual space allocation report.

Oversee the department's fiscal and research offices, including sponsored research management and reporting, and draw on data provided by these offices to produce summaries of revenue, spending, and departmental fiscal obligations. Formulate and administer the department's annual operating budget. Supervise the planning and execution of Department of Chemistry budgets and provide budgetary summaries and recommendations to the Chair and other administrative personnel designated by the Chair (funding sources include state funding, UF Foundation accounts, and F&A revenue).

Direct activities related to the daily operations of the Department of Chemistry. Direct oversight of multiple administrative units, including the department's offices of finance, human resources (HR), facility operations, purchasing, and safety. Coordinates activities of the above offices with the department Chair's office.

Responsible for implementing and ensuring compliance with UF fiscal and administrative policies in the department. Recommends improvements in programs to manage the department's operations effectively. Acts as the catalyst for short- and long-term departmental projects in HR, finance, and facilities. Provides updates to the Department Chair and Dean's office, as requested, on all fiscal, HR, and facility functions within Chemistry. Oversee departmental compliance with Affirmative Action procedures.
Responsible for ensuring all departmental programs, activities, and services comply with university, state, and federal regulations. Oversight of the safety of working conditions in the department. Arrange training and vaccinations of departmental employees for the use of pathogens, human blood, and other hazards. Maintain records of employee training. Work with faculty on the safety training for all laboratory personnel. Review accidents and provide information to and review incidents with EH&S. Responsible for the department's interface with the UF Police Department on issues such as building locking, security, and weekend events. Coordinate and complete administrative reports as requested/required by CLAS, UF, the State of Florida, and granting agencies.
Direct the efforts of and supervises departmental staff. This includes the oversight and supervision of all chemistry store operations and associated staff, including shipping and receiving. Responsible for the financial integrity of the stores operation and record keeping. Consultation with faculty, students, and staff to maintain the stores as useful and convenient research support facilities.


Expected Salary:

The salary range is $96,500 - $110,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree in an appropriate area and six years of relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and eight years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

The candidate should have extensive knowledge of UF and state administrative procedures as required for an academic department. This candidate should have excellent oral and written communication skills, people management skills, and knowledge of proper fiscal and business management procedures. Evidence of leadership skills and knowledge of chemistry is preferred. The ideal candidate will have an experimental science background, financial, business, and HR leadership experience. Knowledge of building design and construction is preferred.
