One-Year Temporary Full-Time Geology Instructor
Position Title: Geology Instructor
Position Type: Full-time temporary faculty
Starting Pay: (Step 1 to Step 4) DOQ 

Hours per week: 40 

Days of the Week: Typically Monday-Friday; duties may include evening, weekend, and online teaching assignments 

Work Schedule: Variable, depending on class schedule and other duties 

Responsible to: Dean of Arts and Sciences 

Job Summary/Description:
Provide instruction to students in geology and/or other science-related courses, develop curriculum, assess student learning, and provide student advising

Essential Functions:
Job Duties:

  1. Teach geology and/or other science-related courses, using approved student learner outcomes; teaching assignments are generally during the day Monday through Friday, but could potentially include evening, weekend, and online instruction.

  2. Hold at least five scheduled office hours per week for student assistance.

  3. Provide student advising and assistance in course selection, transfer, career planning, and internship/job placement.

  4. Be a resource for students (e.g., provide letters of recommendations for scholarships and/or for college/university programs).

  5. Participate in program, department and division meetings and in in-service activities.

  6. Participate in course assessment, including preparing a report on the assessment of courses.

  7. Work with other college personnel to assess outcomes at departmental and/or program levels.

  8. May be asked to participate in college committees, taskforces, peer teams, or other college service activities.

  9. Perform other essential job functions as assigned.

  10. Demonstrate a commitment to the Umpqua Community College mission.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Thorough knowledge of geology and demonstrated ability to communicate this knowledge.

  2. Ability to use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques, including the use of technology in the classroom.

  3. Ability to work with and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.

  4. Ability to provide services to students in a manner that does not discriminate as to race, creed, religion, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, sexual preference, or marital status.

  5. Ability to observe, instruct, and oversee students ensuring safety in classroom, lab, and field environments.

  6. Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with students, fellow employees, and community members.

  7. Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and have the ability to use a learning management system (UCC currently uses Canvas).

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in geology required

  • Minimum of one year previous teaching experience in geology required

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Community college teaching experience

  • Online course teaching experience

  • Experience conducting field trips

  • Knowledge of local and regional geology
