Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Scientific Data Division has an opening for an ML and Data Sciences Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

The Scientific Data Division fosters breakthrough discoveries through the application and development of novel data science methods, technologies, and infrastructures in partnership with science domain experts. We perform focused research and development in the areas of data driven modeling and analytics, scalable methods, data lifecycle and infrastructure, digital integrity, security, and privacy for scientific computing, and sustainable software engineering with deep science partnerships.

The Usable Data Systems (UDS) group in the Scientific Data Division has an immediate opening for a postdoc researcher who will join a team that is engaged in a wide array of research and development projects. In this exciting role, you will collaborate with researchers and application scientists from the DOE Office of Science community, and faculty and students from universities both nationally and internationally, on a wide range of software development and data science issues supporting the scientific mission.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform research on automation of scientific workflows in a variety of fields, such asmicroelectronics and environmental sciences, biosciences, etc.
  • Develop new methods and tools using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for automation and autonomous science, such as, self-driving experiments and self-guiding field observatories.
  • Disseminate research results by publishing and presenting in high-impact journals and top conferences in the field.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Develop approaches that incorporate newly developed visualization and dimension reduction methods.
  • Apply dimension reduction and feature detection, e.g., via topological data analysis, to high-dimensional diagnostics of machine learning models, such as loss functions.
  • Develop high-performance algorithms for visualization and data analysis of machine learning models.

What is Required:

  • PhD degree, within the last 3 years, in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical field including natural sciences.
  • Experience in one or more areas of scientific workflows, AI, data management, resource management.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or related languages.
  • Ability to publish in top journals and conferences.
  • Ability to conduct research in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in C++.
  • Experience in environment sciences, microelectronics, or other natural sciences.
  • Experience in developing open source software tools.
  • Experience with one or more of the machine learning libraries: PyTorch, Tensorflow, Jax.
  • Experience with large scale systems including HPC or cloud computing.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 5 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $6431-$8642 and is expected to start at $7843 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.

  • Work may be performed on-site, hybrid, full-time telework. The primary location for this role is Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work must be performed within the United States.
