SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

2 Openings - Early Childhood Specialists II
Plan and guide educational activities of children in the early learning center at Lake Washington Institute of Technology. Under the direction of the early childhood specialist III, perform classroom work such as planning activities, preparing materials, documenting observations and recording enrollment, environmental set up inside and outside, and maintain a safe and healthy environment. Supervise children's activities in doors and outside; use standard educational equipment, and perform general duties such as preparing snack/lunch, washing dishes, and laundry. May mentor college students enrolled in the early childhood education program. Maintain an environment that meets both the college's early childhood education program standards and Washington state standards. This position may be assigned to a specific classroom or may float between classrooms as needed.
 
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervise children in educational activities as well as during lunch, nap time, free time, field trips, transitions between activities and playground periods
  • Plan, implement and evaluate activities for children under the direction of the program supervisor or early childhood specialist III
  • Working as a positive team member, assist with room arrangement and rotation of materials
  • Mentor and provide feedback to ECE lab students
  • Administer prescribed medication and first aid; handle medical emergencies as they arise
  • Know and follow Department of Early Learning child care licensing requirements; meet and maintain DEL and MERIT requirements
  • Perform related duties as required
  • Regular and satisfactory attendance and punctuality
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • HS diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree in early childhood education preferred
  • 30 credits in early childhood education required; 45+ credits in early childhood education preferred
  • One year of  early learning work experience required; two years preferred
  • Knowledge of developmental issues related to children ages 1 to 6 years
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Due to the diversity of the college population, we encourage applicants who are multilingual
  • Must be registered and have an updated record in MERIT (Department of Early Learning database)
  • Valid First Aid/CPR card for infants and young children, current food handlers' permit, and AIDS/HIV/bloodborne pathogens training prior to employment required
  • Proof of negative TB test within the last 6 months of hire required before first day of employment and satisfactory completion of criminal history investigation required
  • Physically able to lift 50 lbs.; able to participate with children in indoor and outdoor physical activities 6 – 8 hours per day and able to respond quickly to emergency situations
 
 
 

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

Compensation
Salary range is $2477.00 - $2785.00 per month; salary placement for current classified employees is per the classified bargained agreement. (Per current bargained agreement, Early Childhood Specialists are scheduled to work while class is in session.  As a result, actual salary may fluctuate depending on number of days worked). This position works 40 hours per week. Working hours may vary, but are typically between the hours of 7:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday; schedule to be determined by the supervisor. State Retirement Plan; sick leave begins to accrue at the rate of 1 prorated day per month, upon employment. This is a union-covered position, which requires the payment of membership dues/representation fees

  • Visual Requirements: close vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer  screens  and do close-up work; ability to adjust focus frequently
