Postdoctoral Research Scholar in Future Technologies Enabled by Plasma Processes
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) invites applications from highly motivated PhD holders for the position of a postdoctoral researcher to work under the supervision of Dr. Vinoy Thomas, Associate Professor of Materials Engineering, School of Engineering (SoE) and Dr. Yogesh Vohra, Professor/Associate Dean, Department of Physics, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). The selected candidate will work in the NSF EPSCoR program funded grant “Future Technologies Enabled by Plasma Processes (FTPP).” This position requires a PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering or a related discipline.
This position would entail synthesis and incorporation of plasmonic nanoparticles on to polymeric substrates using low temperature plasmas and atmospheric jet plasma systems available at UAB and within the collaborative institutions under various gas conditions. The eventual application will be development of substrates for Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) of various biomarkers and exosomes. The experience with spectroscopic, microscopic techniques such as XPS, AFM, SEM, Nano-IR, Raman spectroscopy and other surface properties including wettability and surface chemistry is desirable. The scholar should be required to work with interdisciplinary team of biologists and chemists, physicists, and materials scientists for SERS surface fabrication and characterization. It is expected that the scholar should work in time-bound manner and deliver publishable results according to project milestones and to interact with scientists, faculty, and students from multi-institutional research thrusts/groups and have a have long term commitment to plasma technologies in an academic environment. This position is a full-time one-year appointment funded by the US National Science Foundation. The position is renewable for additional years depending on mutual agreement and funding availability.
