The department of the Miami Project has an exciting opportunity for a Post Doctoral Associate to work at UHealth. The Post Doctoral Associate performs scientific research and studies under the supervision of managing staff. Moreover, the Post Doctoral Associate promotes institutional recognition through literal contributions to the scientific community.

  • Conducts research on specific areas of study as assigned.

  • Prepares research reports and technical papers for publishing.

  • Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories.

  • Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.

  • Develops advanced analytical models and systems and provides solutions and analyses to support strategic and tactical decisions.

  • Employ a strong working knowledge of Neuroscience (Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or Biochemistry is acceptable but Neuroscience preferred) in performing and interpreting experiments.

  • Contribute to a research program aimed at identifying novel therapeutics for promoting axon regeneration and neuroprotection after injury to the central nervous system.

  • Use previous background experience in extracellular vesicle technologies and/or cell transplantation to perform experiments in models of CNS injury and disease.

  • Perform procedures and analysis associated with histological and behavioral assessment of animals following spinal cord injury including, animal surgeries (laminectomy, tracing, cell transplantation), animal post-operative care, animal perfusion and tissue dissection, tissue sectioning and staining, behavioral measurement of sensory and motor function as well as fluorescent and confocal microscopy.

  • Carry out cell culture of cell lines and primary cells, perform viral vector infections and plasmid transfections and employ cell-based assays of cell death, axon growth, axon myelination and cell migration.

  • Perform biochemistry, immunochemistry and molecular biology techniques including cell and tissue staining, western blotting, gel electrophoresis and ELISA.

  • Be able to manage transgenic mouse colonies, perform genotyping and coordinate breeding programs for mice.

  • Prepare datasheets, ACUC/IBC protocols, chore lists and laboratory resources to be readily available to the supervisor and other staff when needed.

  • Organize and present data to laboratory peers, using knowledge from read literature to make effective summaries, propose follow-on experiments and answer questions.

  • Assist in the writing of manuscripts and grant reports. Analyze data from experiments and coordinate the management of multiple studies.

  • The position will require after hours and weekend work with animal care and management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or Ph.D. in relevant field

  • No prior experience required

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
