POSTDOCTORAL REsearch Associate

The Department of Chemistry at UTK currently has a post-doctoral position available for a Chemist or Materials Scientist with expertise in synthesis and characterization of molten salts for energy applications. This position will focus primarily on the synthesis and evaluation of metal halide eutectics including uranium halides.  Research will be directed toward the correlation of eutectic composition and performance. The program will have a strong collaborative component involving a multidisciplinary team of chemists and engineers to assist in the thermophysical characterization of the eutectics. Under general supervision, the postdoctoral fellow will carry out the fundamental investigation of metal halide eutectics for energy applications.  The selected candidate will work in close collaboration with other researchers involved in the project.

 



Qualifications

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

 

  • Synthesis and characterization of metal halide salts and eutectics
  • Conducting solubility measurement based on electrochemistry and spectroscopic techniques
  • Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Qualifications Required:  

  • A PhD in Chemistry, Engineering, or Material Science
  • An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience
  • Motivated and safety conscious
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (which includes Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Ability to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever changing needs with the proven ability to function well in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks to meet deadlines
