Overview

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute seeks a Research Technician, to work in the CLL Center in Dr. Jennifer Brown’s laboratory under the Department of Medical Oncology Primary responsibilities will include up to daily processing of CLL blood samples in sterile conditions for storage and/or experimentsDFCI also seeks an experienced and motivated research technician to assist with studies of the molecular mechanisms leading to the development of Chronic Lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), the most common adult leukemia of mature B lymphocytes.   The person in this position may also be frequently preparing DNA or RNA from these samples and as time allows may be able to participate in other projects in the laboratory which will allow broader experience.   The Research Technician position will assist scientists in performing scientific research, development and/or clinical tasks of varying complexity. In general, this position will assist in the set up, operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment, monitoring experiments, making observations and calculating and recording results. In addition, the research assistant will collaborate with a diverse array of community members at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School, including molecular biologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, epidemiologists, genomics specialists, and computational scientists among others to advance and enrich her/his educational experience. There is potential for contributions to be published and presented in several forums. The qualified candidate will be motivated and hard-working, good at collaborating with others in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Logs in research samples for cryopreservation and storage
  • Processes research samples for cryopreservation and storage
  • Enters sample information into database and performs sample searches
  • Retrieves samples and data from other departments, as required
  • Catalogs and maintains sample inventory in logs, notebooks and databases
  • Assist with the distribution and shipment of samples for special protocols
  • Performs low complexity lab procedures with appropriate training, including DNA and RNA extractions as needed. 
  • Assists other lab staff, as required
  • Performs various quality control procedures on equipment and reports unexpected findings to the appropriate supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned
  • May have opportunity to do more complex experiments under supervision as other duties allow

All staff need to perform and document daily assigned tasks during their shift, such as equipment maintenance, checking supplies stock and centrifuge cleaning. 

Ability to use computers, centrifuges, pipettes, LN2 tanks, microscope and other lab equipment as it becomes available.   Extensive work performed under a hood utilizing sterile conditions.  Lab coats and gloves to be worn.  Handling of blood, bone marrow and saliva samples. Work in a lab following all OSHA and Safety guidelines as well as utilizing Universal Precautions.  Works in high volume busy lab setting which can be stressful at times. 

Performs tasks under general supervision.  Able to work independently and as a team player.  Follows established procedures after appropriate training.  Seeks advice for aberrant occurrences.

Good working relationship with the Brown and Davids laboratory members, as well as with the research staff of the CLL/Lymphoma clinical research program and the central hospital laboratories.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a major in Biology or Chemistry preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-4 years professional research laboratory experience. 
  • Previous laboratory experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems desired.
