Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC), founded by the North Carolina State Legislature in 1965, works to reduce deaths and injuries on North Carolina’s roads and the entire nation. The Center advances these goals across all surface transportation modes through a balanced, interdisciplinary program of research, evaluation, information dissemination, and training. HSRC works with communities and transportation professionals locally, nationally, and worldwide. We are a leader in the field of transportation research, embrace a safe systems approach, and are focused on safety for all.
Position Summary
This Post-Doctoral Research Engineer position will require involvement in all aspects of transportation safety research related projects with activities ranging from study design and statistical analysis to preparation of final reports. The candidate should expect to work on more than one project at any given time under different project or program directors. The nature of the work at HSRC changes rapidly; therefore, the person must adapt to the changing environment and be able to transfer skills among projects. Specific principal functions include:
• Design and execute research studies including formulation of concepts, project planning, study design, data collection and management, data analysis, and interpretation of results.
• Prepare proposals to secure funds for highway safety research.
• Communicate research results through technical reports, journal articles, and public meetings.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
PhD
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
A doctorate in civil engineering with a concentration in transportation engineering is required.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Priority will be given to individuals with experience in transportation safety research activities including evaluation of traffic control devices, roadway design parameters, and safety aspects of pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. Specific skills being sought include 1) data management and analysis including knowledge of databases and statistical programs such as SAS and R, 2) experience in the application of state of the art statistical methods in highway safety, and skills in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data mining, 3) experience in spatial data management and analysis. A track record in contract research, publication in scholarly journals, and strong speaking and technical writing skills are also highly desirable.
