RA’s will assist on CPI’s ongoing research projects, which focus on the real assets of the Catholic Church and of other faith-based entities locally and globally.
Projects for the summer of 2023 may include but are not limited to the following:
- Property & Church Life Data Analysis and Visualizations
Work with historic and current financials, property data, and sacramental records from the Diocese of Fort Wayne – South Bend, the Archdiocese of Chicago, various California dioceses, and other dioceses and regions, as well as census data, to distill trends and create rigorous quantitative and qualitative analyses and visualizations in ArcGIS and R illuminating the life of the Church as expressed in space, with public, diocesan, and academic audiences in mind.
- Adaptive Reuse Precedent Database
Categorize and create summary descriptions for church property adaptive reuse precedents for incorporation into searchable, public-facing database.
- South Bend Faith-Based Property Inventory
Develop GIS-based inventory of faith-based properties in South Bend, incorporating cultural and social dimensions in addition to physical, financial, and civic characteristics; create public-facing exploratory tool. Develop “Houses of Worship District” proposal as part of South Bend 2045 Comprehensive Plan.
- Catholic Archival Mapping
Translate geographic information about the Catholic Church contained in Notre Dame library archives into digital maps and time-lapse visualizations.
Successful candidates will possess strong quantitative analysis skills; an interest in mapping, urban issues, real estate, and the built environment; and a desire to assist faith-based organizations, with a particular emphasis on the Catholic Church. Applicants who are curious and proactive, effective communicators, attentive to detail, and hold themselves to a high standard of excellence in their work will thrive in CPI’s summer research lab environment.
Preference will be given to applicants who will be resident in South Bend for the summer and can work in person. Remote applicants may be considered for part-time positions. Please include your residency plans in your cover letter.
