Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Lab Technician for the Laboratory for Primate Dietary Ecology and Physiology. The position conducts laboratory analysis of wild-collected primate urine samples to be used in conjunction with behavioral and nutritional data to answer questions regarding orangutan health, energetics, and social behavior. Assays include, but are not limited to, C-peptide of insulin, creatinine, thyroid hormone, neopterin, and cortisol.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Work closely with Dr. Erin Vogel, PI, to manage laboratory activities, oversee general lab equipment maintenance, and purchase supplies.
  • Enter data, ensure with the PI that REHS safety trainings are complete, train students in the lab, and work closely with the PI on developing new assays and analyzing data.
  • Opportunities for publication and co-authorship on projects will be discussed.

Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a high school/vocational school education or equivalent with coursework completed in the relevant science area(s) and one year of research study experience. An equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience.
  • Requires a practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques, and the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • May require a valid driver’s license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
Certifications/Licenses

  • Requires the ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Requires a practical understanding and a working knowledge of basic scientific techniques.
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. in the field of anthropology or biology. A M.S. in the field of anthropology or biology and experience in socio-endocrinology, nutrition, energetics, or related topics which is preferred to identify and report findings to the funding agencies in the proper manner.
  • Previous laboratory experience in running ELISA and RIA analyses and validations of assays is preferred.
  • Experience with Access database management and R for statistical analyses is preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Requires the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds
  • Must be in the lab at least 3 days per week and can do data entry at home 2 days per week.
