Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Associate III in Radiation Cancer Biology at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
The primary purpose of the Research Associate III position is to, under direction of the PI, perform technical research activities and assist in the conduct of highly specialized research in cancer biology. This position will provide essential support, by creating unique cell and mouse lines, for the collaborative research by a team of investigators funded by a National Cancer Institute program project grant that is focused on understanding how the BRCA protein network suppresses tumorigenesis and impacts therapeutic response, which is critical to improving the outcome of cancers associated with homologous recombination (HR) and other DNA repair defects. Incumbent is expected to maintain cell and mouse lines, use CRISPR/Cas9 technology to create gene-edited cell lines, and validating the lines created. Specific tasks used may include passaging/maintaining cell lines, electroporation/transfection of cells, preparation of cells for cell sorting, isolation, analyses and banking of cell clones, mouse breeding and genotyping, generating mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs), and record keeping, etc.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Under the direction of the principal investigator, conducts independently, or as assigned, specialized research in the area of molecular cancer cell biology and mouse models of cancer.
  • Assists in the development of performance standards, selection of methodology and instrumentation and coordination of the analytical, biochemical, physiology and instrumentation functions with the clinical and research areas to ensure conformance with the goals and objectives of the department.
  • Under supervision, assists in the conduct of continuous program of research and development regarding the analytical and instrumentation functions of the laboratory, participates in the evaluation of the existing procedures, suggesting revision where necessary and proposing new procedures where required. May assist in organizing, leading and conducting highly specialized research activity for a particular research project.
  • Assists with the instructing and training of students, fellows, and laboratory assistants, as required.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant science plus one (1) year of related research experience, or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be competent in standard laboratory techniques and mouse models of cancer.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaborative.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe products.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior background in the fields molecular cancer biology and mammalian cell biology; documented training and certification to conduct small animal research.
  • Knowledge in genomics and/or bioinformatics.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Lab environment. Moderate noise. Exposure to blood, excrement, antineoplastic drugs and possible exposure to infectious and communicable diseases. Universal precautions are mandatory. Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
