Postdoctoral Associate

Job Description


Applications are invited for up to two postdoctoral research positions in the Minnesota Institute for Astrophysics at the University of Minnesota to work on HST and JWST projects related to galaxy formation and the reionization of the universe. You will have the opportunity to work with Dr. Claudia Scarlata and a broad network of US and international collaborators, on the following programs:

  • PASSAGE : a 591 hour JWST  pure-parallel NIRISS spectroscopic program to perform an unbiased survey of galaxies out to z>8;
  • PIE : a 400 orbit HST pure-parallel program with a coordinated ground based spectroscopic component to estimate the escape fraction of ionizing radiation at z~3; and
  • LaCOS : a 119 orbit HST program following up 41 galaxies from the Low-Redshift Lyman Continuum survey to map their Lyman-alpha and stellar population properties. 

Within these programs, you will have ample freedom to set up and pursue your own science investigations and followup projects. 

The successful applicant will have access to the Large Binocular Telescope, Steward Observatory telescopes and the Supercomputing Institute at the University of Minnesota.
The position is for 2 years, renewable for a third year, contingent on performance and funding. Candidates must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a related field before the commencement of the position.
