Department/Organization: 204411 - Biological Sciences

Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm

Job Summary: Under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee, The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the Ph.D. or other doctoral degree.

Additional Department Summary: Postdoctoral positions are available at The University of Alabama to individuals with research interests. Individuals holding these positions are to conduct research with various faculty members on a variety of projects.

The University of Alabama seeks applications for Postdoctoral positions. Successful candidates will hold terminal degrees and demonstrate a record of academic achievement in a research area or areas covered by the College. The College and or hiring department will establish a series of structured merit-based evaluations. Initial appointments are for one year, with renewal contingent upon demonstration of research productivity.

This candidate will work with and further develop a new isotope tracer model (IsoTracer) using both new and existing data. The successful applicant will apply the IsoTracer model to existing data generated by a series of nitrogen stable isotope additions to streams where the canopy and fish populations have been manipulated. In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to further develop this modeling approach to examine couple carbon and nitrogen flow through lotic food webs using whole stream additions of isotopically labeled carbon and nitrate and within biofilms associated with Cladophora mats using data produced by current research associated with a National Science Foundation award.

The successful candidate will write manuscripts and collaborate with undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs in Dr. Thomas' research laboratory, build working relationships with the members of several aquatic ecology research laboratories on the UA campus, and collaborate broadly with several national and international scientists. Responsibilities will include applying and further developing a R-based, inverse modeling approach for quantifying stable isotope flow through aquatic food webs and quantify associated error. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to conduct field work in Northern California (South Fork of the Eel River), Flagstaff, Arizona, and other potential locations. Other responsibilities will include scientific writing (publications, manuscripts, grants), collaboration, and student mentorship (undergraduate and graduate). This position may be eligible for remote work but residence in Tuscaloosa is strongly preferred.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Candidates will need to have confirmation of successful defense, completed their Ph.D. or have it completed by the start of employment. Applicants should upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae and include at least two references in the reference section of the application. Please upload additional documents to the “other documents” tab as needed.

Skills and Knowledge: Applicants must have a publication track record that includes first-author publications, demonstrated modeling experience, and knowledge of R and/or similar modeling platforms (e.g. python).

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in aquatic ecology and associated sampling protocols, experience managing personnel (technicians, undergraduate students, graduate students, etc.), and the ability to work independently.

Background Investigation Statement: Prior to hiring, the final candidate(s) must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation and information obtained from social media and other internet sources. A prior conviction reported as a result of the background investigation DOES NOT automatically disqualify a candidate from consideration for this position. A candidate with a prior conviction or negative behavioral red flags will receive an individualized review of the prior conviction or negative behavioral red flags before a hiring decision is made.

Equal Employment Opportunity: The University of Alabama is an Equal Employment/Equal Educational Opportunity Institution. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment or volunteer status without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, age, genetic or family medical history information, disability, protected veteran status, or any other legally protected basis, and will not be discriminated against because of their protected status.
