Job Summary

The Academic Advisor-Early Alert works with faculty, Early Alert Counselors, peer academic coaches, and first-year students to promote academic planning connected to long-term career goals and academic progress in a proactive holistic case management advising model.

Essential Functions

Assist in the development and implementation of retention initiatives by working with faculty to provide timely feedback to students about their academic progress. Advise students on college policies, procedures, and program requirements. Provide highly responsive holistic advisement on individual student needs and barriers to success inside and outside the classroom.


Advise and provide students with degree plans that meet their short-term as well as long-term educational and career objectives and assist them in developing their class schedules.

Support Early Alert Counselors and faculty in monitoring and following-up with students on their academic progress. Assist and coach students who are in jeopardy of withdrawing from the college by working in conjunction with Early Alert Counselors and faculty to develop a plan for academic improvement.

Maintain knowledge of College Readiness Standards and El Paso Community College program requirements, and act as a liaison between students and faculty. Create and maintain record retention system to document students’ status and progress.

Develop, plan, and conduct on-going educational First-Year seminars and workshops for students and faculty on strategies, policies/procedures, and issues pertaining to student academic advisement and student retention and degree completion.
Work with first-year students in collaboration with Early Alert Counselors and faculty to promote the planning of intentional academic pathways.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

1. Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of related experience in an educational environment related to student development and counseling or an equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

NOTE: A copy of the transcript reflecting this required education MUST be submitted for consideration and reflect completed coursework and degrees conferred. The candidate must be fully qualified for the position at the time of application.

2. Experience working with a College or University integrated student system.

3. Ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.

4. Effective communication (both oral and written) skills.

5. Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures.

6. Working knowledge of degree planning.

7. Experience with Banner Student Integrated System.

Special Conditions:

1. This is a security-sensitive position as defined under the Texas Education Code, Section 51.215; the successful applicant will be required to undergo a criminal background check, as permitted and/or required by applicable law, and in accordance with the College’s policies and procedures.

2. Must be available to work evenings and weekends.

Copies of transcripts must reflect completed coursework and conferred degrees. All academic coursework and degrees must be from an accredited college or university or be certified by an acceptable agency that the institution is recognized by the appropriate governmental agency in its home country (this is generally stated in the degree evaluation).

Transcripts issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by a full translation (word for word) by a current member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Additionally, each foreign transcript must be evaluated for equivalency to United States accredited coursework.

Applications containing foreign transcripts that are not accompanied with the above required documentation will not be considered.

Out-of-town candidates invited for an on-campus interview will be reimbursed for one-half of the transportation cost for travel performed within the United States. The College will arrange and pay for up to two nights lodging.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk and use hands to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
