Materials Science - Postdoctoral Researcher

Job Description

Company Description

Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Are you interested in joining some of the brightest talent in the world to strengthen the United States’ security? Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where our employees apply their expertise to create solutions for BIG ideas that make our world a better place.

We are committed to a diverse and equitable workforce with an inclusive culture that values and celebrates the diversity of our people, talents, ideas, experiences, and perspectives. This is essential to innovation and creativity for continued success of the Laboratory’s mission.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct both applied and fundamental research toward understanding the degradation of additively manufactured materials, as well as those fabricated by conventional methods. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of materials scientists, physicists, and chemists applying existing and developing new theory-experiment integrated methodologies to enhance the basic understanding of process-structure-property-performance relationships to mitigate the corrosion and hydriding susceptibility of pertaining materials. This position is in the Metallurgy & Advanced Microscopy Group of the Materials Science Division.

In this role you will

  • Characterize additively manufactured articles to determine microstructure, chemical distribution, and surface roughness and their dependence on process parameters.
  • Design and perform experiments to evaluate mechanical properties and propensity for corrosion.
  • Develop methodologies to examine hydrogen-material interactions and produce experimental results for multiscale experiment-theory integration.
  • Lead, contribute to, and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
  • Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists both internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Maintain and establish laboratory protocols.
  • Document research, publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience with materials characterization methods for structural materials (i.e., X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy including SEM/EDS/EBSD and TEM, optical microscopy, and/or mechanical testing).
  • Knowledge of or experience in directed energy deposition additive manufacturing.
  • Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings, and/or teaching lectures.
  • Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Knowledge of or experience with integration of experiment and multiscale modelling.
  • Knowledge of or experience with electrochemical measurements assessing materials degradation behavior.
  • Knowledge of or experience with measurements probing hydrogen-material interactions, stress corrosion cracking, or hydrogen embrittlement.

Additional Information

All your information will be kept confidential according to EEO guidelines.

Position Information

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
