Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the characterization of a variety of polymeric, inorganic, and organic materials using magnetic resonance microscopy. You will be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for conducting research to understand aging and degradation mechanisms in a variety of materials used for industrial and energy applications. You will receive training in performing independent research that is complementary to the work of other members of their department, while also participating in multidisciplinary projects. This position is in the Materials for Energy and Climate Security group of the Materials Science Division.

In this role you will

  • Design and conduct complex experiments related to the characterization of materials using magnetic resonance microscopy.
  • Conduct advanced research toward an improved understanding of polymer dynamics, diffusion of small molecules in complex systems, and the aging and degradation of mechanisms of materials.
  • Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on NMR/MRI instruments.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address research problems.
  • Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary and multi-institution team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Develop and present written analyses and verbal briefings that capture and communicate research results as well as periodic progress reports.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in the application of magnetic resonance microscopy to characterize complex materials and systems.
  • Knowledgeable of advanced image analysis using Matlab or other image processing applications.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects through the publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings, and/or teaching lectures.
  • Initiative and interpersonal skills with a desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of NMR/MRI instrumentation.
  • Experience independently operating Bruker micro-imaging systems.
  • Experience using Paravision 6 or higher software to collect and analyze data.

Position Information

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.

Security Clearance
